Very sick story I saw in todays Metro section 🙁:|🙁

Couple Sentenced For Enslaving Illegal Immigrant

<< A federal judge sentenced a Silver Spring couple yesterday to nine years in prison for enslaving a teenager from Cameroon and forcing her to work for three years without pay as a housekeeper and babysitter.

U.S. District Judge Alexander Williams Jr. also ordered Louisa Satia, 36, and Kevin Nanji, 41, to pay their victim $105,306. Williams said the figure was a conservative estimate of what the couple owed the teenager, who is now 18, for her labor if she had been paid a little more than $12 an hour.
>>

Uhhh? are you guys looking over the fact that she was ENSLAVED? They kept her in a locked room, didn?t let her go outside or listen to the radio or watch TV? It wasn?t a job, this is the type of thing that has been outlawed for 140 years!

<< I'm a college kid, and I only get paid $9.00/hr for my computer skill. $12.00 is too much IMO. >>

have you ever hired daycare or a housecleaner/maid? they are pretty expensive.

no i wasn't. i may have put the :Q in the wrong place because i was shocked by the story. not the $12 an hour. my bad.

My bad, may be that's why they force the girl to be their slave, couldn' pay or unwilling to pay regular wage for a housekeeper. Of course you have to take in interest with the wage they owed to the girl.

<< getting that much is a stretch. she was underage. >>

so how much do you think she should get for being enslaved for 3 years?

my statement refers to the fact that a prevailing wage for a 11-(15?) year old should not be $12/hr.

yea, i don't think the judge thought it should be either... that was just what he thought was fair compensation for what happened.

OK, perhaps so. I just got that impresssion from

If the couple has any sort of money (sounds like they do) she could make a killing of them in a civil suit for pain/suffering and a host of other things. Just found it odd how it was calculated.

Let's put it this way, if every 15 year old kid in America can make more thatn $100,000 by the time he/she reaches 18 doing housework...dream on! I've been working since I'm 14, deliver newspaper, baby sitting, mow lawn, roofing, building computers...etc. Now I'm 22, I haven't made that much money. I think the money is here is more than wages, it's for emotional damage, that sort of things.

obviously...

what is surprising to me is how many of you responded with "seems a bit high" instead of looking at the most disturbing aspect of this story. some girl is enslaved in america, and your first response is that the wages were too high? wtf?!

Don't forget the fact that it is 12 dollars an hour, for EVERY hour of the day, for EVERY day of the year, for 3 years. So i'd say that it is more of a wage thing than emotional settlement.

All you greedy bastards saying she got paid "too much" --

You realize that the $100,000 figure is assuming around $12 / hour for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week?
If you take into account she was held against her will 24 hours a day and more than likely worked to the bone for far longer than 8 hours.. she could have been awarded up to ~$315,000, not including overtime or interest..

Is Camaroon a poor country? If it was, she should be happy that she is even alive. Ever watch those world vision infomercials? I would rather be enslaved then starving to death and living in a hut, sleeping on the ground.

Sorry buddy, but your kind are becoming all too common. I got paid $6 to $8 for three years of work at my college doing amazing computer stuff. You don't have a degree and you are probably working at the University. Get over it.

People who act as live in housemaids get paid rather well. $12 is a very conservative estimate.

why would anything I said qualify me as greedy? Like I have a personal stake in this or something?

I feel bad for the girl, obviously thats horrible. I thought instead of replying with a generic aww, thats so f'ed up that I would pick something specific that I found interesting. You could nitpick the other side as well and have deductions for food, clothing, etc. but thats not the point nor what I found interesting. If you dont think how the "restitution" was calculated was interesting, then forget it. I'm not diminishing the ordeal this girl went through.

I dont know where you are from but in my newspaper help wanted ads for live in nanny's/maids generally offer free room/board and perhaps 300-500/month. Certainly doesnt seem that close to $12 does it?

So let's see, so you don't mind losing your freedom, working 16+ hours for 3 years straight, and being sexually abused. Dunno... guess I would mind that. Fat chance the sexual abuse took place already while she was still a minor.

Edit: Look at it this way: if you wouldn't have the means to feed your family a while, would you put your daughter to work in a brothel for 3 years in a row, so she 'would at least have food'? Or would you rather eat a bit less yourself a while and look for other means?

well seriously i would rather take 3 years of imprisonment and come out super rich than worry my whole life about where my food is going to come from. (although that probably isnt her case.)
