Azureus:

From time to time, I get an odd message about three times in a row from Azureus at random times. The 'quote' below is the message and my ipconfig /all. Can someone elaborate on the meaning of this? I don't get a response when I ping 192.168.1.100, and I don't think any PCs (or devices) use it. I have something called UPnP forwarding in my router settings (separate from port range forwarding), and I also disabled a service called Universal PnP in Windows's services (though this has happened long before I disabled it). In short, what is UPnP? In my router I have the port range 6881-6881 forwarded (TCP/UDP) to my IP (192.168.1.110). Is this correct for BitTorrent clients like Azureus? I have a cable modem, so I don't use PPP or PPPoE (I think).

UPnP: Lost connection to service 'WANPPPConnection' on UPnP device '192.168.1.100'

Subnets:

I have a home network with about 5 PCs/5 notebooks. I'm unsure because the bulk of them are my dad's, but there are definitely not more than 10 total devices hooked up to the network. What should my (and their) netmask be? I have always set it to 255.255.255.0 for some reason, but I must have forgotten why. Do I get a (very minor) speed increase if I only set it to be something else (allocate less IPs)? Subnets split up a network, correct?

The router has to allocate less memory to accomodate less IPs? Am I thinking on the right lines?

If it did make a difference I'd question the quality of the router. Ok in theory I suppose it's plausable, in a perfect world. Can't imagine it being enough for anyone to notice. Then again I can't say I've ever encountered this question before.

In theory Azureus doesn't need you to manually forward ports if you have a UPnP-enabled router and allow Azureus to use its UPnP plugin. Azureus works fine with most of my broadband routers using just UPnP, but my WGT634 requires me to check "Map ports even if owned by another computer" in the Azureus UPnP plugin's config to work reliably.

On networks with multiple gateways, Azureus sometimes tried to negotiate port mappings with the wrong router (one not listed as the default gateway for the nic in use). For some reason, this too was fixed by the same change in Azureus' UPnP config.

Sorry for the rambling. Maybe you'll get some use out of it.
