couple questions about digital cameras

1) For a camera like the Canon S70, would a high speed compact flash card be beneficial/support high speed tranfer or should I just get a regular CF

2) For a 7 megapixel digital camera, at what resolution settings (2048x1536, 1600x1200, fine, normal, superfine, etc.) do people usually takes pics

3) How does the CF reader work? Is it recommended to connect the camera to the computer and transfer pics or can I just use the CF reader? (are there any advantages/disadvantages to using the CF reader?) It seems easier just to have a CF reader connected via usb port and pop the cf card in

1) for single shots a normal CF card is fine, if you use the cameras Burst mode you will want a faster one because it will wrote faster and clear the buffer faster
2) ALWAYS shoot at the largest resolution possiable, and shoot raw
3) useing a CF reader is most times faster then the camera even if both are USB2, the card reader also saves batteries because transfering files EATS battery life alive, it is easier and theres really no reason to use the camera to transfer files unless you HAVE to

if you want to use the included software some are stupid about useing the camera to transfer to make the software work right, but most of them let you just import from the Card reader also, i dont use the included software because its just a bunch of bloat

I agree with the top but left out a important thing.

Buy rechargable NIMH batteries. They last longer in the camera and can be charged 1000 times. I bought the Enigizer 15 min quick charger and then some 1800mah ones off ebay (they were the cheapest). I have had absolutly no problems using the ebay batteries in the quick charger and buy a few so you have some in the camera and some on the charger ready for use. You wont ever go without missing a shot this way. I have, oh, about 75 AA on hand. Not only for the camera but have two boys with toys so they are always being used.

And buy, if you can afford to, the biggest card you can and keep the camera on the higest setting. If you should ever have to scale down (crop) you will still have great pictures. The higer the res and you start to crop the more pixilated the pictures will become. Doubt you will ever have that come into play with a 6mp at highest setting though 😛

And for me I just take the pics right off the camera. Why not if you have the recharageables and I dont have to do anything but turn the camera on and hook up a wire. But if your always pressed for time I suppose you can use the reader if it faster and need it to be. I use the xp software and if I have to crop or touch up I use picture it by microsoft. Works for me and real easy to use. Not only that it was $4.99 at menards in the software rack and does everything I could ever want so why spend gobs of money.

And which Panasonic were you thinking of getting? I had the Canon A75 didnt like it myself and went and got the Panasonic FZ3 which I just love to death. 3mp but a 12x zoom and proffesional lens cant be beat 🙂

BTW you have a deal on my CF card if you still want it. The pp you mentioned is fine and if you have heat let me see it if not you can see mine link below and I will send once I get your card from you 🙂

got a digi cam question here and i didnt want to start a new thread . . .

can olympus digital cameras use anything besides xD-memory cards? i have my eye on that C-7000 ZOOM (also, could you tell me if that is a good camera? is it better to get the similar one from canon?????)

The best thing you can do is go to www.steves-digicam.com and check out his reviews on the cameras you want. He generally goes into depth on the camera and supplies you with sample picture. What I did that made up my mind on which camera was best for me to make the clincher between the Canon A75 and the Panasonic FZ3 was I went into sample pictures of both and saved the pictures (ones that were almost the same shots) onto my computer and switched from one to the other. I was able to see the diff between what each camera was able to do for myself. The Canon was more robust but the Panasonic had more detail in the pictures. Like one the roof with the canon you culd not see the tiles. When I switched to the same shot on the Panasonic I was able to see the lines where the tiles where. It was the same way for the bark and the palm trees in the park shots that won me over.

I also checked between the Canon A75 and the Olympus and the Olympus to me is a much better picture but your going to loose some Gadgets the CF cards which are cheaper IMO to get ahold of, and sound when you take video but the pictures looked so much better to me when I went from one to the other. But this is my opinion. Check the ones you are looking at and thier features and see what really works best for you.

As far as the cards go I had the Olympus 2040Z which was the same body and mem card and it will not take any other other then the xd memcards. the Canon depending on which one if it has the CFII slot will take a CFII drive card which can give you the choice of small drive (I belive it will handle a 3 gig) or a cf card. So dont rely solely on what people have to say. Google or go right to the steve site and study up on the cameras and again see what works best for you.

Hope this helped you.
