Couple panoramas of St. Martin

Aharami

Lifer
Discalimer: Requires Flash

Honeymoon was nearly two years ago, but I'm finally able to find some time to go thru all the pictures and edit them. Came across two sets of panoramas I took and decided to give it a shot in creating a pano tour. These are my first attempts.

A few words about the locations - The Island we were on in the first pano (Tintamarre) is a small island off St. Martin. It is completely uninhabited but is a big snorkeling spot. Instead of going with the commercial tours, we talked a local boater from Orient Bay into taking us to the three islands off St. Martin (Tintamarre, Pinel, and Green Cay). He dropped us off at each island, left, and came picked us up back again after 3 hrs. Yes, we were taking a big risk trusting a stranger to transport us from an island we'd otherwise have no way of getting back from, but it was worth it! Instead of having to rub elbows with dozens of strangers on a cramped boat, sharing these remote pristine beaches with them, and being on a strict timeline, we got exclusive access to all three beaches, on our schedule, for quarter of the price. Wife and I always try to get off the beaten path on our vacations, but when we do go on the beaten path, we try to beat the others to it. 😛

Pinel Pano, shot from here

The 2nd pano is from the island of Pinel. Although it is uninhabited also, it is more commercial in that it has a day bar, and sees a lot more traffic than Tintamarre and Green Cay. Green Cay is basically just a small piece of rock with nothing to see on it. But the lack of any traffic whatsoever near that island made it the best snorkeling spot of the three. Too bad a heavy storm rolled in while we were there, and this cave was the only shelter we had from the elements for a good hour or so.

EDIT:
third pano. This time in HDR. The unnatural look is intentional
St. Martin sunset. On our way back from the dutch side, we pulled over on the side of the road to watch the sun set over the island.

Isn't it St Maarten?

did you guys go to Anguila while you were there? Anguila >>>>>>>>>>> St Maarten. You can sit on the beaches there, and watch as the people in St Maarten get rained upon! 😀

It's just about the last remaining "unspoiled" Carribean island. It has a few resorts, bit still a good bit of natural space. some dickhead golf course is moving in, though. 😡

Actually it's either Sint Maarten or Saint Martin - depending on who you ask, the Dutch or the French. We didn't go to Anguilla, but we heard that the beaches there are amazing! We decided to take a day trip to Saba instead. In retrospect, we should've gone to Anguilla because the long and choppy fast-boat ride to Saba got both wife and I seasick. Although, Saba's a pretty cool island - definitely unique. It doesn't have any beach attraction as there are no beaches there. The entire island shoots straight out of the water, and the hike to the top of the island is pretty intense. Supposed to have amazing views from the top, but unfortunately, the peak was under cloud cover when we got there. I'd definitely recommend checking out Saba, although I'd caution against taking the fast-boat there. Spend a few extra dollars and fly there in a prop plane and experience what few described as one of the most intense runways in the carribean.

Next time we'll check out Anguilla for sure. We wanted to visit St. Barthelemy, but we heard everything is stupid expensive there. So we decided to skip it.

Very nice work congrats. Great pics! Beautiful local!

The only thing I don't care for is the fake flash created dynamic lens flare. Otherwise like I said beautiful work.

What software did you use to make those panoramas? Pretty cool, and great pics! Just got back from St. Thomas a couple weeks ago - probably won't go there again, but would like to check out other islands down there.

I was playing around with the software and forgot to take that out. I actually like it 😛

Cool! What did you use to take them?

All pictures taken handheld with a Canon XSi and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 lens with a CPL

Ahh yes, I spent many a happy night passed out drunk with a 20 dollar whore on that beach.

Inflation sucks. Nowadays a burger and beer there will cost you more than that (although the prices on the main island aren't bad at all, esp on the dutch side)

The panoramas were created with Hugin and the flash pano tour was created with an older version of Autopano tour

Definitely check out the islands around St. Martin. I've never been to St. Thomas, but from what I've heard about that island, St. Martin is a lot different.

That's cool
How did you keep the exposure even?

Manual mode. Did a sweep of the pano with the shutter half pressed. Kept a mental note of highest and lowest aperture and shutter speed values. Set exposure somewhere in the middle, and took all pictures at that setting. Hugin took care of evening out whatever discrepancy was left in stitched pano. Conversely, I could have taken all shots in RAW and edited the exposure in post, but I didn't do that for these panos.

I think I lucked out in these panos because the sun was overhead, so everything was more or less evenly exposed

Oyester Bay Beach Resort. Friendly staff, adequate rooms, and great location because it's right at the border of French and Dutch side, thus giving you easy access to both.

how is the beach right there? can you snorkel off shore right there? it looks like there is some coral in the water right there.

also did you do all inclusive and if so how was that? and is there any kind of nightlife there?

we may play a long weekend trip in may so I'm possibly getting ideas here 🙂
