When I first got my card I had some trouble making the resolution optimal for my screen. I have a Samsung 2032mw, which runs optimally at 1680x1050 @ 60hz. However my display settings are being somewhat fickle. I have managed to get 1680x1050 to show up a couple of times by editing the registry, but one or two reboots down the line the progression is back to 1440x900 -> 1600x1200 which my monitor can't display. I've done all the reinstalling of drivers etc. I don't run CCC because that was getting in the way (I located the drivers on the CD and used Windows to install).
So I have had to make do with 1440x900 which is actually unsupported by this monitor. Sometimes I boot up and the monitor refuses to display anything and just says "Unsupported Mode, Optimal Mode 1680x1050". An unplug of the Samsung and plug in of my old Dell 17" and another unplug and plug back into the Samsung, and its fine again. I tried to force the display settings to show 1680x1050 using the registry thanks to a tip from a Google search, but it doesn't work anymore.
A strange thing I notice is also that there are two monitors displayed on the Display Settings, when I only have one. The driver being shown on my Device Manager for my monitor is NOT the Samsung, but instead "Generic Non-PnP Monitor". Despite installing the Samsung driver, this thing still shows up like that and refuses to go away. Maybe its not the the graphics card itself, but the issue with the monitor driver. Like I said, the driver Windows is using works fine with my old Dell 17", no problem.
Another issue that is definately related to the card imo, is the weird dots showing up in Oblivion. I'm not sure this is the case for any other game, but sometimes these dots show up on screen. I have a feeling the term for this is "Microstuttering" which I've read in a few places (but didnt know what it meant). I run Oblivion on the max resolution, 8x AA, Bloom, maximum view distance and shadows, and it runs smoothly at 60fps (no lag whatsoever). Is this an issue that ATI cards have with running high AntiAliasing? Or something else? Any fixes for this?
Thanks in advance.
