It's not so much Turkey's hatred, but existing power blocs. For Russia to support Turkey now they not only have to risk NATO crawling up in their shit, they have to abandon most of their other alliances in the region.

We manage to support the Saudis and the Pakistanis and... It's messy, but it can be done.

Well, right now I'm hoping that the coup succeeds because...why not? I'm not that familiar with Turkish politics, and it depends on how I perceive Erdogan.

I didn't think the coup against Morsi was a good idea.

You're an idiot. You know nothing of the politics there yet you want the coup to succeed. Turkey is one of the US biggest allies in the area. The US has a joint airbase there with nuclear weapons.

I know that:

1. Turkey has a history of the secular military staging coups when it got too Islamist.

2. Erdogan is considered a thin-skinned autocratic Islamist.

There's been several coups before and it's never hurt our relations with Turkey

Fox news has video of military personnel involved with the uprising surrendering to government forces so it does appear that this has failed.

It's a shame that the coup failed.

It's pretty much part of Turkish life that the military steps in to keep a secular government every decade or so.

It looks like we can see Turkey becoming a fully Islamic state now.

Maybe we *the west, over hundreds of years* shouldn't have made things so shitty for the muslims... they are like the abused step-kids that have grown up...

So apparently Erdogan is a billionaire after a decade and a half of public service.

And he has built a presidential palace which dwarfs the White House.

Yeah, fuck that guy. The coup plotters really screwed up by not assassinating him.

And Istanbul already has a perfectly good palace that no one is using. 😡

Of course, Ankara doesn't but that's only because it's a craphole and no one with the resources to build a palace would want to build it there.
