Counterstrike sound help!

I'm running a AMD Duron 650 with a Geforce2 32MB card, and am using onboard sound (unfortunately provided by AC 97')

Everytime I start up a game, it sounds really crappy, meaning that the sounds are all messed up and are droopy-sounding.

Has anyone ever had this problem, and is there a way to fix it?
