I have a cable modem and am going to build an extra gaming pc/file server and would like to be able to run it as a dedicated server once a month or so for my friends and others possibly to get togather and play without having to plan a big Lan-War.

My question: Are these things good enough and are ther any programs just for running CS servers.

Any info would be most helpful🙂
 
A CS server really depends on how fast your cable is, how much RAM you have, and a little on how fast your comp is. I have Optonline and run a dedicated now and then, and with 6 local people, they each get around a 45-50 ping. I also have 1024 gigz of DDR. Don't expect everyone to get a 20 ping, and just use CS itself to run the server, works fine.

If you're after commands for doing admin stuff (changing map etc) you can use the default HL ones (not sure what they are offhand) or Admin mod. I love using admin mod, it has a huge array of commands for you to use to run a pretty decent CS/HL mod server. 🙂

As mentioned by Futher, a good upload speed is a must to get a good CS game going, but as you're all in the local area, you should ping pretty good (as opposed to if someone from Britain joined somone's 128k server in Japan).

This question has been asked MANY times, but here goes again.

Your UPLOAD on whatever connection you have is the biggest key in the number of players and quality of service on the line. If you are running your server off a 128k upload, you'll get 4 people on the line and that'll be PUSHING it. With 384up, 12 people are going to be doing well and any higher are going to feel network lag for sure. On my 384up cable line, I have 12 internet players and 2 local and its quite fine. To keep most CS players happy on their cable/dsl lines, you'll need about 3-4k of consistant upload per person for the server. If you want a REALLY good experience, you can raise the rates and give 5-6k/person for network stream to help ensure good connectivity. The more bandwidth/person you allocate, the less the people you can have join at any given time (lowest you should possibly go is around 2500).

My server is a 1ghz Athlon with 512 Megs of ram (the faster the processor and more ram the better). You can get by with much less (especially if you have less players), but that's my dedicated server for everything (other than just HLDS).

It'll give you lots of tips, configs, etc, to help run your server. My server runs HLDS on Win32 and I use AMConfig to help keep HLDS alive, as well as manage variables, plugins for meta and adminmod.

Sweet. Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks for the info. I actually ended up at that site yesterday as I was swarching for maps, and waypoints for the pod bots. I hope to have the server up and running in about a month, it is going to be atleast a,

1.2 (266 fsb)
512 megs DDR
60 gig 7200 rpm primary maybe 80 gig special edt.
2x80 7200rpm secondary maybe in a raid array
DVD
Burner
TI 4200, etc

I am not trying to brag I just want a good server that will perform great and play games well when needed at lan-wars
(4 the guy who spends money on everything but a pc and you can't turn away because he makes the # even):|

Are you going to be playing on the computer and hosting the game at the same time? If so, then getting the fastest processor and video card is what you'll need. The best thing to do for LAN wars is a dedicated server, without a dedicated server, your LAN partys are going to stink with the one machine hosting and playing at the same time.

Learn how to setup HLDS on Win32 or Linux, it'll make playing CS on your server just plain smooth since that machine will do nothing but serve the game. If you do go with a dedicated machine, you won't need a fancy video card or a RAID setup -- just a fast processor and lots of ram. With that speed a processor, on a dedicated machine, you'll easily be able to host a 32 person server (no bots). With bots, it'll slow down a bit, but it shouldn't be too bad.

For all my LAN parties, I always setup the dedicated server for all the games we play (sof2, hl/cs, q3, ut, serious sam, operation flas, etc). Its the only way to host the party.

When it is at my house there won't be anyone on it, it will be dedicated to the game only. Now at the lan party it might be in use as both. Our lan party consist of an average of 4 on 4 so running a server and playing on that machine is no prob.

I see that you play SOF 2 how do you like it, we played the crap out of it at our Memorial Day Lan-War. We also played it online during slow periods that was pretty cool. We could not get the dedicated server option to work, it would run but nobody could see it. Have any idea's.

This
server.counter-strike.net will give you all the information you'll need to run the server for hlds. It will have documentation, scripts, etc. Make sure to READ the documents, its all pretty simple once you read it.

For SoF2, its a little less documented, but the information is out there. Check out an application called SoF2 Runner, it is an GUI configuration tool to help setup the dedicated server. The people who make SoF2 runner make similar products for virtually all Quake3 based games.

For HLDS, read the server link and it'll point you to things you want/need to make gaming more enjoyable.
