What is the difference between the 80MB download and the retail version that comes with 2CDs?

From what I've noticed, quite a bit. Basically, the retail version does not come with all of the necessary *.wad files in your cstrike directory. When you buy the Half-Life CD, and then apply the HL updates, and patches, you then can play more maps, which is what most Half-Life servers will run.

Don't fear, I run a Counter-Strike server, and have a download center if you have the retail CD. You can get a patch for the Counter-Strike CD there which has all of the necessary *.wad files and maps that you'll need to play on most servers.

HasteZone Download Center

When you're done, connect to HasteZone :) hastezone.uti.com (204.248.52.19:27015)

Hope that helps.

You missed the biggest difference of all. The retail version costs money! And the downloaded version does not come with all the .wad files or .bsp files to play certain maps that servers run. Many maps that many servers run are user-created maps that need to be downloaded whether or not you have the retail or downloaded version of CS 1.0.

*note, CS in beta 3 was better.

I bought the retail version for one big reason, the fact that the install is 300mb vs 800 or so if you have hl and download the free version. plus i think the game is great and i wanted to pay the mod makers back a little for their hard work. otoh, it doesn't seem to ahve all the maps that everyone else has, but then again, i haven't a problem getting them from friends/sites/etc. another problem that i have found is that cs retail crashes when loading de_vegas. oh well, frag on!
