Counterstrike Problem

When I play Counterstrike the game runs fine until a smoke grenade is thrown. I lose control and I am a dead man. Freinds that have slower systems and cards do not have the same problems.
Video is set at 1024x768 in direct 3D mode.
Lastest video drivers are loaded. Could it be I am using Windows 2000Pro?
Any help on fixing this?

switch into openGL mode...i find it's much nicer than Direct3d. well, that's my opinion anyways. I dunno if it'll help, though...but maybe.

i'm just pissy about CS lately cuz i've been sucking so bad...grrr. i HATE days where i'm at 3-26 in a round.
 
also set sprites lower. It will make the smoke look ugly and cartoonish but it helps.In console type /fastsprites 1
 
Hmm my friends always seem to have their counter strike crashing.. they are also running win2k with geforce cards..
