Counterstrike Display Problem

I just got this game and started playing it the other day. But whenever I exit a game by pressing the escape button I get a black screen. I have to ctrl+alt+del it to close it and start the game again. Is this caused by a display problem? What video settings should I use?

I am running it on a Leadtek Geforce2 pro 32mb and Windows 2000 sp
 
yes that is a problem with D3D and half life. I do not remember the cure for it. Usually you can hit ESC again and go back to the game.
 
Try joining the game via an external server finder (All-Seeing-Eye, GameSpy) and you should be able to escape and come back in fine. You also won't lose your sound if you do so in the future, either.
 
I tried running it in OpenGL mode but I just get an error.

I'll try running Gamespy and see if that helps.

Try to get OGL to work, upgrade drivers or something (it ought to work with your setup) - D3D is really not the display mode of choice for HL.
