Counter-Strike video problems... Help!

OK, I finally installed CS. But when I try to play it and hit the ESC key to bring up the menu, my screen goes BLACK! I hit the ESC key again and it goes back to the game. I have to use CTRL-ATL-DEL to get out of the damn game? WTF?
This is of course using Direct3D mode. I don't dare use software mode! I did try software mode, and the menu DOES come up when I hit ESC, but Hell with Software mode! :|

I tried Sierra to see if there were any updates to the game, and there weren't. 🙁

My rig is:
A7V+TBird
V7700 GF2 NVidia 6.3.1.0
Win2000
384 ram.

Before anyone tells me to change Video drivers... tell me you were having the same problem with 6.3.. please...
 
lol, settle down dude! the man's right, use opengl!
and direct3d does suck! it should be a last resort for any game!

All I get is "D3D Sucks!" I know that already... just want to know how to fix it. but whatever, it does work in OpenGL.

OK, to some real issues now...

I just got the game, right... IT's ROCKIN'

Man, it's hard though! maybe a better ping would help me(28.8)?? hehe, but I need some advice from some savvy players... Anyone know of some good websites for me? I can't tell the enemy from the team? I sorta miss the BLUE/RED Concept in this aspect.

Also, seems there are a TON of maps I'll need. being I'm not going to download them with my 28.8, I'll be downloading them from Work (T1) and bringing them home. Any good sites that have all the maps I can download from?

My honest opinion is...it is related to Win2k and the D3D engine or the nVidia drivers. I noticed the same problem in D3D. The occurance is rather random on my machine.
 
Nore, I've not gotten that close to them yet without going horizontal. lol

Honestly... Everyone is chamo'd out. From a distant... no, I can't hardly tell. I just see a sillouette. I'd at least like it if my crosshair changed colors when I tgt'd an enemy. 🙁

In darkish areas it is difficult to tell. Playing CS on a 28.8 will not do you any favours. Ping is everything in this game. It really is addictive though. 😉

I found that if you play it a a smaller resolution, i.e. 800 x 600 it gets a little easier to see the opposite team. Try raising the gamma a tad also, that can help. I've persisted with 1024 x 768 and am slowly learning the body shapes of the teams. It is difficult at first though.

Take it easy and learn the maps first, after that it'll be pretty ez, hehe.

This is going to be like the old Quake 2 days! (yes, I thought Quake 3 was disappointing)

*sigh* the GF is not going to be happy with this game purchase.. LOL! At least with all the others, I beat them and they go on the shelf.

(I can see me upping a CS server at work, like I had in the Quake 2 days 🙂)
