Counter-Strike video problem... Help!

OK, I finally installed CS. But when I try to play it and hit the ESC key to bring up the menu, my screen goes BLACK! I hit the ESC key again and it goes back to the game. I have to use CTRL-ATL-DEL to get out of the damn game? WTF?
This is of course using Direct3D mode. I don't dare use software mode! I did try software mode, and the menu DOES come up when I hit ESC, but Hell with Software mode! :|

I tried Sierra to see if there were any updates to the game, and there weren't.

My rig is:
A7V+TBird
V7700 GF2 NVidia 6.3.1.0
Win2000
384 ram.

Before anyone tells me to change Video drivers... tell me you were having the same problem with 6.3.. please...

Almost certainly a video driver issue.

Have you tried a later driver release? Like maybe 6.47?

Did it for me b4. Didn't bother me much, but I did a fresh install and works great.

OpenGL will work MUCH better than D3D on any nVidia-based card, all the way back to the venerable RIVA 128.

OK, I give... but this Still doesn't address what the problem is. oh well, whatever.

Definately use OpenGL. I have the same nVidia card and Direct3D (at least in HL) on that card is sh*t compared to OpenGL.
