Counter Strike, Video Cards and servers

My friend and I want to play CSS, but I'm not sure if my friends card will handle it.

He has a 5700FX Go on his laptop, so that might be a problem...

I'm pretty sure my 6600GT wont have any problems, since I beat HL2 with setings on medium/high.

We're mostly interested in CSS to frag each other 1 on 1, so I'm wondering if the game allows us to host our own server from my or his computer and be able to play at the same time. Meaning that we dont have to have a separate server... Can we do that, or we gotta have a separate PC?

To answer your video card question, I think he can handle it. I mean...my crappy AIW 8500DV can handle it...

If you host your own server on your comp, then you have to play on LAN. But if you use Hamachi or a similar program, then you can bypass that and not need your friend to be at your place physically for a game.

You don't need Hamachi, or be on a LAN to host your own server. I regularly host a server for myself and a couple of friends to play on. I think you might need to set sv_lan to 0 (or the opposite of thedefault anyway) in the console to get it to work, but otherwise it should just work. You might want to password protect your server though, just to stop random people turning up and pwning you...

For a point of reference, my 9700 Pro with a 2.4GHz P4, 512MB PC3200 RAM runs CSS at 1024 x 768 on medium setting and it really zips. No FPS problems at all.

My FX 5700LE had the same results. 🙂
