Counter Strike Source

You trying to set a record for threads started in one day?

Unless you are going low-end I don't think it really matters. I could be wrong though.

no, i just have a bunch of questions to get off my chest and anandtech is the greatest cuz in afterdawn, you gotta wait for hours for a reply

hurray for anandtech!

o ya, i am goin low end so which one is better

Well it is better to look on a card by card basis I would think. Just choosing ATI vs. Nvidia is probably not the smartest way to go because a X300 vs. a 6600 vs. a 9800 or whatever is a better way to evaluate things.

What are your options?

Edit: here are some old AT benches that may help: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2182&p=4

ok im really poor i need a decent pci-e card under $120 and i think my best option is the 6600GT according to reviews and stuff

nvidia is great, because they have some very stable drivers, but ATI can produce some great cards...it depends on what your price range is.

its easier to compare card to card, not brand to brand.

not really, back during the ATI 9xxx and geforceFX days, ATI cards outperformed nvidia cards by a large margin. ever since the 6xxx series nvidia cards have been pretty much even with their ATI counterparts in Source engine games

ati always outperforms nvidia in hl2 (steam) based games. i'd take any ATi x800 series or x1x00 gpu over anything from nvidia for CS:Source. i get 150 fps stable max settings @ 1680x1024 with x1900xt

I'd get the best bang for your buck. I'm an ATI guy myself but I won't blindly recommend ATI if nvidia fits your price point better.

I'm not familiar with canadian $ and how far it goes for parts or the price differences so I really can't recommend much.

I went from a 7600GT to a x1900xt 256mb and was blown away at the difference in picture quality. Granted these two cards are in two separate price categories, but wow what a difference. All the textures now look so vibrant and real. When I plant the bomb for the T side, the bomb actually looks like a REAL explosive device. =]

When HL2 came out they were saying ATI was benching better. But that beng said, the HL2 engine is very forgiving and any decent card will do fine. I play it on my laptop which has an ATI 9700 128 and it runs on almost all high settings, with the exception of HDR.
