Pretty sure it's still one of the most popular multiplayer games on PC. Heck CS 1.6 is probably still massively popular.

Thanks. I actually checked steam's stats last night and saw 16k players, but 1) I have no context for that figure, and 2) a lot of kids were / are still on winter break.

It's extremely popular. Right now, the Steam stats place CS in #3 and CS:S at #4.

It's crazy how either of them can do that considering all of the incredible games released especially something like TF2 which is free.

I can kind of see CS:S, but really, CS? I can't believe the longevity of it. Nevermind the graphics but it's just the same crap over and over, made worse by this dust2 24/7 stuff.

I remember being an admin at Bloodstar and helping run their dust server back in the 1.3 days. Blew a good chunk of my life away but it was a great crowd in that community.

Still very popular, CS:S was and is an awesome game. The nature of the community means it will last a long time.

Yep, 1.6 is more of an older crowd. CS:S has the younger kids.

But even of the younger kids all the douche bags went to XboxLive because to be cool in school you need an Xbox and you need to play the latest BF/MW title.

Which is great for the computer game community.

I have it installed but I can't remember the last time I played it. I still see tons of servers on Steam though.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Now just tell the rest of them to quit playing League of Legends.

Wonder if CS;GO will take off

With Valves reputation over the past 3 years, CS:GO will be released, exactly 1 year later CS:GO 2 will be released, and neither game will be supported.

There will be a surge in players at first. But as it becomes clear that valve is not going to fix the glitches and exploits, the player base will drop off.

At least that is what happened with left 4 dead 2.

I doubt it. It looks just like they are making it a console type release and I don't see console kiddies having fun with it because it is not named CS:CoD. As for PC, it may have a flare up like CS:S did wen it came out but you'll still see more people playing 1.6 and source after a month or so I bet.

Just reinstalled Source and 1.6 after I built my new PC (originally to play BF3, etc lol). And I've been stuck playing these 2 since then and there are still just about as many servers as there were when I left a few years ago. Haven't played since my CALeague days but after playing around a couple hours I'm close to where I used to be. None of these new shooters can match the feel of CS and thats why I keep playing. It's just hard to find a decent server that isn't 24/7 dust 2 though.

Name another shooter (apart from CS:S) that was released in 2004 and still gets even semi-regular updates.

No? Exactly. CS:S Does. Even if they make me unhappy sometimes...

How's the wall and corner hacks? Those were the reason I got fed up and quit playing back in early 2005.

You have to compare it to a game like pool or baseball. It doesn't matter if it's the same thing over and over again. It doesn't need to change because the people you're playing with is what makes it interesting.
