About 2 weeks ago I started having problems with counter-strike and it seems like no matter what I do I can't seem to solve my problem. The game itself will load just fine, but it will crash whenever the server I'm connected to changes levels. For example: If I'm playing on dust and then the level changes to italy the game will crap out right before it will load italy and give me this error, "WARNING: couldn't open valve/halflife.wad" and then I click OK and it spits me out to the desktop. This happens no matter what level I'm on and what level it's changing to, I just used dust and italy as an example.

I have the latest version of half-life (1106) and the latest version of counter-strike (1.1), and I've even tried removing and re-installing both games, but nothing has helped.

Here are my system specs:
p3 600e (not overclocked)
30gb IBM 76gxp hdd
256mb cas2 memory
Geforce 2mx (6.31 detonators)
Vortex 2 Superquad (running the last drivers they made before they went under)
Windows 98
Direct X 8

To my recollection I didn't change anything in my system to cause this to happen. As I said I have already tried removing and reinstalling both halflife and counterstrike and it still didn't work. Is there something I'm missing?

HMMMM, well short of reinstalling 98 I would try to reinstall directx. Don't know how much that will help, but it sounds like halflife is trying to hook to your OS and something in the OS is messing it up. Thats the short answer, the long one being to reinstall your OS (because you already tried the other programs). It sucks that the only to really fix 98 is to reinstall. Maybe if I learn more in life I can figure out how to fix 98, but thats it for now. :) Luck

igiveup...

Nice name :)

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm thinking that you're right. I'll probably try reinstalling the game and all my drivers again and see if that helps, but if it doesn't then I'm going to have to blow it all away and start over again. Unless of course someone else out there has any idea how I can fix this without reformatting.

C'mon people speak up, someone's got to have an idea.
