Counter-Strike problem

my friend and i both own retail copies of CS, each with unique cd keys. i had him come over to my house so we could play CS, but we are having problems logging in. both computers are connected to my netgear cable router. i changed the cd key on my second machine to his cd key. now when we try to connect to a common server, the first person to connect gets on fine without any problems. but the second person will fail to connect. this happens on every server we try to connect to. any ideas why this is happening?

edit - we are not logging into steam with the same steam account. i have my own, as does my friend.

Well you can't both log in with the same cdkey for starters. You must each use a unique cdkey. I'm also guessing that you'll each need your own external IP.

he did say he changed the cd key to his friends...so they have 2 different keys, but the same ip's nearly. i wouldnt of thought ip mattered...i thought your steam account was a roaming profle?

as i stated in the original post, we each have our own cd keys.

i am not sure about the external ip thing. one more thing to note is that if we both connect to different servers, we do not have any problems. it is only when we try to connect to a common server, only one of use will connect and the other will fail.

u mean valve? is it a problem where each server will only allow one connection per ip?
