Wow. Looks like a very updated CS 1.6. I didn't like how the controls in source made everything feel so 'heavy'. It was too much like CoD.

Regarding mechanics, Counter-Strike is what it is. It is a high-speed, arcadey FPS that makes no pretense of any kind of realism - - so there really is no point in adding mechanics to it to try to make it more realistic.

That's not what the fans of the series want, so I think Valve is smart in not changing that.

When you change the mechanics of a game, you essentially change the core of the game experience. I think if Valve wanted to create a more realistic FPS multiplayer, they would be better off creating a new IP to build it around.

But iron-sights a "gimmick?" No, it is just a more immersive, realistic way to aim a weapon. It's the same view you have in real life when you aim a gun, so I don't see how that can possibly be viewed as a "gimmick."

it feels a lot like 1.6, but the bullet spray is different. still trying to get used to that.

I think I'll pick it up, I put a lot of hours into CSS quite happily. I never played 1.6 though, so I'm just hoping for improved hit detection really. Expanded UI options and giving more control through it (as opposed to the console) would be a nice touch too.

Am I the only one who thinks this game sucks? Wow I wish I could get my money back.

You can. Someone asked about that in the steam forums.

I like the game though. I hope they put out more official maps though. Also I haven't played too much of it but is there a non-instant respawn gun game server?

Well I requested a refund and hopefully I will manage to somehow get it.

hmm now i'm interested if it's like 1.6, i absolutely hated source, it felt like something you go to a mall arcade in and put a quarter in for.
1.6 just "feels right"

if they can get the spray patterns correct, i'm all in 😀

It's not perfect, but it's better than Source. It feels a lot more solid in general, but you can tell many aspects have been consolized (not necessarily in terms of gameplay, but UI elements, menus and so on).

I like that they're trying to make more guns more viable to use than just the usual suspects, and I really love some of the new stuff like the decoy grenade. One thing I'm not a massive fan of is that they dumbed down some of the maps in a worse way. Aztec's revision - great. Nuke's revision? Ok, some of the subterranean stuff was a little redundant, but taking away the entire back entrance? Not a fan. I also hate how their matchmaking system works right now - it should at least allow me to specify what distance I want to search in, not randomly put me in servers thousands of miles away which give me 150-200 ping.

I've put 45 hours into it thus far and don't have any intention of stopping in the immediate future - it's CS, at the end of the day.

I played a couple of rounds...just a nicely updated CS...better start menu, slightly different graphics..all in all I like...will probably go to this for my weekly CS fix....aaahhhhh....

So far I like it (except having to jump through hoops to get it to work with my processor - AMD FX stuff needs a weird beta bios update)

Just like the old CS games... I've enjoyed it.

no. CS is supposed to be all about realism.... from use of real guns to penalizing "running and gunning"

I've been playing it like crazy throughout the beta. Have well over 100+ hours clocked in. I'm enjoying it and already preordered.

How so? I can't see where "realism" was ever supposed to be part of CS. The mechanics are all about speed, not reality.

The naming and modeling convention used on the weapons has little to do with realism, and more to do with just fitting in with the theme of the game.

Originally it was a more realistic alternative to any of the other shooters. Problem is, at least from my point of view, is that it hasn't evolved in over 10 years.

Its more realistic than Call of Duty even with prone and ADS ill say that.

Wow I havent seen the Steam stats in a while. CoD used to top that list easily.

Activision has went out of its way to kill CoD on PC. I have bought all off them except WAW, and after COD4 its always been ruined in one way or another. Mainly, dedicated servers went away and it went to P2P. They came back with MW3, but they were unranked. They always find a way to poison the well.

I have a feeling the player base is as responsible for that as anything. They don't want it to evolve.

If Valve rebuilt CS to include elements of realism (real sight aiming, barrel inertia, breath movement, slower character movement with more position options, like prone and lean), the CS fan-base would completely rip them apart. Valve knows that.......CS will always be exactly what it is for that reason, and it will never be any more realistic.

There's really nothing wrong with that.

I do think there is a hole for small group play FPS MP that is more realistic. I've been waiting for a good one for a long time, but there just doesn't seem to be enough interest in a developer creating one.

The Casus Belli mod (for CryEngine2) is the closest thing I've ever played to a pure, realistic FPS MP. The player movement is the best I've seen (allowing not just leaning, but leaning in every position, including crouching and prone). Weapon recoil and handling is very similar to real life. I loved that game....but alas it's just a mod and never got enough of a community to take off.

<SNIP>

Yeah, its probably too late now to make changes. 8-9 years ago, they would have cried like they did every beta release, but they would have kept playing because there was nothing else to go to. But now with games like BF and COD, the guys who wanted a more modern game are long gone, so all you're left with after all these years are the die hards and broke mofos who apparently can't afford a new PC.

...you realize you are playing a beta and *NOT* what you paid for, right? there are still changes to be made before the release next week.

Am I the only one who thinks that "this game sucks" is not a valid argument?
"This game sucks" can mean anything from a wide variety of issues. Like "I am afraid of loud noises and every time gun shoots I pee a little". Or more reasonable, like "I hate dumb team deathmatch with fast respawn and can't find servers with classic 1 death per round matches".
"This game sucks" doesn't tell people anything beyond the fact that you are too stupid to explain your point of view properly.

And about CS staying the same. At the time of the first release, I think, it was the only game in its specific sub-genre. Other modern multiplayer team FPS came after CS and created and filled their niches. Those who wanted more left. Those who were content with simplistic but fair shooter stayed and shaped CS 1.6 with their rage and whining and made it big as cyber-sport. Why does it have to change in a big way? Update is enough.

I never got the appeal of CS. Like, most games are all about faster and faster, while CS makes you wait for minutes at a time.

Also it doesn't seem to have much personality.

But yes, like Starcraft 2, CS is largely hostage to its fanbase.

I think if anything, CS should be slower to be more like real life. Bunny hopping shouldn't be possible, since in real life guys in swat gear don't jump. There ought to be a sort of aim setup delay of like 3 seconds to give guys a positional advantage.

I'm really stuck on this game. I think it's an improvement from CSS, but CSS was just so bad anything could be better. I just dislike the weapons and I think I need to realize CS isn't for me. It just feels incredibly unrealistic having 7 shots land waist-high and not do anything compared to a headshot on a tiny ass model. I really don't think this will become as good as 1.6 though.
