Counter Strike Buying Help

I want to buy counter strike, I was wondering if the one they are selling in stores for $19.99 is a stand alone or if it requires half - life. Will the future versions of counter strike be free (with half life)?

I don't have half -life right now, and I don't want to buy it becuase the store that I have a coupon for has it for $30. Counterstrike itself is $20.

Go to the store, look at the box, and it will say whether or not it requires Half-Life. You may not want to post requests such as this in a HOT DEALS forum, however. I'm not trying to be mean, but you may want to be aware of the forum rules...

It's a stand alone. It's best to buy half-life (they had a free half-life offer at CompUSA about a month ago) and then download the CS patch. Then you can play half-life, as well as CS (and Opposing Force if you buy that).

I bought the retail version of CS, as it has it's own CD KEY, and I hate large downloads on 56k. It's worth it if you can get the box with the $10.00 off coupon on it. Yes it is the standalone version.

yea...just buy half life and dl the counter strike updates, theres 2 updates you should download. CS is a great game...i think i play it too much. =X

DOH, this isn't a hot deal!!! Anyhoo, I would do as Ranger X has recommended, buy Half-Life and d/l the cs patch. And Killrose, how do you cs with a 56k, don't you lag like crazy?

all you need is a cd key that will authenticate you with the WON network. each key can have two users logged in at the same time, or unlimited over a LAN. if you have access to a half-life cd, you can get buy counterstrike retail and use the cd key from it. however, you do want to have half-life installed. besides being a great game, you can connect automatically through gamespy with people who have the same setup, and most people use counterstrike addon. hope it helps.
