Both types of games have skill elements, but they are very different.

In UT/Q3 type games, killing 1 person/death will will push you up the ladder pretty quickly as you'll just respawn and do it again. Certain moves like wall dodging will give you an edge over your opponents. Certain weapon useage like ASMD combos(rather difficult for noobs) require skill. Knowledge of the map and commonly traveled areas. All these are typical FPS skills. Low health, grab a health pack.

In CS a lot of the skills required for UT/Q3 are useless. You can't respawn, so if you want to climb the ladder you need to kill >1:1. You need to be mindful of your own Life and are forced to balance Offense/Defense. You can't just enter a hall and kill everyone in it(on rare occassions you might succeed), chances are you'll end up dead before you can even get your sight on the enemy. Strategies like using Flashbangs, Smoke, and Cover Fire greatly increases your chance of success. At the same time the enemy might use Flashbangs, Smoke, and Cover Fire against you forcing you to go defensive. Bullet trajectories are more realistic, so your crosshair is only a general indication of where your bullets are going, not actually where they will go. Certain weapons are better suited for different situations and useage. No health packs, everytime you take damage, the closer to death you are.

No, CS is not a Noob shooter, that's not to say a lot of Noobs don't play it though, but that's a good thing as without Noobs games die out.

According to me, CS:S is just the best.
What more do you need in a FPS which involves reality of the guns, excellent graphics and skill?
Like some guy said...pointing a rocket at a human! who wud ever do such a thing!
CS:S involves a lot of skill. I was familiar with CS, but got into it for about 6 months now.

I guess people who bitch about the game here are the people who come to some maps, get killed and simply call the best guy a hack and leave. Those are the most irritating kind of people and I love killing them.

For eg, come to scoutz_rooftops map, I will pwn u, and half of u wil think i am a hack...
[]v[]anu --> thats me in CS:S

CSS is total balls it really is. The people who play it (in general) are AOLers, the whole die in 3 hits thing really sucks, and i ALWAYS get shot in the head.... Not just me though half the deaths i see are headshots.... total rubbish.

Im excellent at FPS's I started with halo multiplayer, got good at that and have came into every other FPS ive played with a reasonably good skill level often improving to become a veteran once ive gotten to grips of the weapons and maps etc. But with CSS.... nope, just didnt happen.

My 3 Attemps at playing CSS. I gave it three chances, and they went as follows:

1: I joined a game and i am terrorist i think. Somone drops their shotgun near me and apparently i pick it up. I spend the next 5 mins explaining to this idiot "IM A NEWB!! I DONT KNOW ANYTHING! I DONT KNOW HOW TO DROP!" all i got back was "OMFG U F**ING N00BZOR!! GIMME GUN!! U HACK! U CHEAT!!" Eventually he got shot in the head and i died a few seconds after that...

2. Since im new i look for a server with some nice people :S fat chance o that but anyways i found another server with a DIFFERENT!! YES DIFFERENT MAP!! Not that stupid desert thing that for some daft reason is SO popular. So i played as a counter terrorist for a change and after 30 or so mins i made about 4 kills, all through pure luck or acting like a wimp hiding behind a box waiting to jump some unfortunate guy n shoot him in the head when he walks past, (9 outta 10 times my ambush would fail and i would die). I gave up.

3. This was getting dire.. I really wondered how this became the no1 multiplayer game.... I joined another daft dustbowl or w/e its called server. WOW! LOOK! KEVLAR!! yesss! I had totally by myself without any help (but a lotta hinderance) from other players discovered HOW TO LAST LONGER! excellent... Couldnt wait to go out with my AK47 fully loaded, grenaded, HE and flashbang and my shiny new kevlar vest and helmet. So i went out to kill me some ct scum and oooo i still died in a few hits.... Just to point it when i go out to kill people i DO follow the rest of the team and participate in teamwork and dont wander off on my own as this gets me killed also....

So why even bother with CSS? I dont know, Half life 2 deathmatch is much better and my current favourite FPS. Theres definate skill involved in that, such as Holding the bunker area in a certain map and airstriking the outside killing everyone :D much fun and kills campers dead. HL2DM > CSS..... ALL FPS's I HAVE PLAYED > CSS

hehe.

It takes more than 3 tries to get into the swing of CS(Source or not). "G" is the key to drop the gun and it sounds like you just were on a poor server.

The only real barrier to entry on CS is peoples knowledge of maps, common paths where enemies will filter through. Setup an ambush and gank a couple of people for easy kills.

I prefer BF to CS because you can't so easily box a person in. At least on pubs, all I saw in CS was map loads, everyone runs out to the first crunch area, grenades fly from both sides, then people slip around the edges and get you from behind or what for you to come into a hallway type area.

It's not that I'm bad at CS, it's just a lot of camping on certain points. It's fairly obvious that people know the maps when you see 3-4 people hold up at a point and just wait for guys to plug.

I just think CS & CS:S are dull. Im pretty good despite not having played them that much - always come out at least even kills/deaths - but jesus guys the genre moved on about 5 years ago!! Teamplay is where its at - individual skill is expected, but can you apply it on a large scale as part of a huge team?

Try JO, I'm not sold on BF2 yet

And yeah OMG Tribes 2 took about 2.5 years outta my life :)

In Q3, the hitscan weapons don't even have recoil, YOU CAN'T MISS.
You can't miss IF YOU ARE AIMING CORRECTLY. I guarantee you would miss me A LOT. You're too used to firing from a fixed position at a barely moving target.

In CS you can miss even if you are aiming correctly. Therefore every hit involves a varying amount of LUCK. This means it's possible for a newbie to hit and a veteran to miss. This will NEVER happen in Q3 or UT. Let go of your fanboy mentality and think about that for a second.
I'd like to point out though that newbs generally don't understand how CS works as they're usually used to playing hitscan games like UT or Q3. As mentioned before, most new players to CS run straight into battle and empty an entire clip, wondering how they missed. Thus veterans still have the upper hand.

So basically I think that, yes, there is some luck involved in CS, but with the proper skills (such as burst fire) you can help tilt things in your favor. I prefer CS because I have better tactics and intelligence than ordinary skills (reflexes, etc.). Hmm, a teammate runs around a corner and gets mowed down. Should I run over and get mowed down too or lie in wait and hopefully kill one or two of them?
