duh.

become profitable.

stop making cars that people can't buy.

aside from that? they pretty much need to destroy the UAW.

The United Autoworkers Union is what's dragging the Automotive industry into the crapper.

altho this is more a P&N discussion.

so w/o getting involved in politics, how can GM get rid of the UAW w/o going bankrupt?

and another thought: What happens to GM/GM's cars/GM's employees/Factories once GM files chapter 11 bankruptcy?

profit: Not goign to happen. Toyota lost more money than GM did last quarter. The entire industry is losing money big time, not just domestic.

cars people CAN'T buy: What does this mean? GM makes some very good cars now that people can certainly buy.

destroy the UAW: not sure what you mean here either. Yes, the UAW are a bunch of greedy bloodsucking vampires. However they are not the reason why things are so bad right now. It's the economic downturn.

Honestly, there is nothing that GM can do to avoid bankrupcy. They have been given an impossible task. Once 6/1 rolls around, just make sure you don't own any stock in that company.

Hope that everyone in the country wants to buy an American car at once. Otherwise, its too late. Its sad that they laid off so many people and thousands more will be laid off after they file. The banks fucked everyone over.

qft. and politicians - not that the country was very supportive of the Big3, but they opened up a hornet's nest by whining about corporate jets and the like.

i don't see any way for GM to escape bankruptcy. and really, it was going to happen sooner or later with the way their system worked.

i really hope GM is able to come out much leaner and more efficient, and really be able to focus on making great products. it's a shame they started that later than sooner.

you still go to an open dealership, and the barely negotiate with with you. Even with 5000 rebate, a truck with nice features still costs you over 40 grand...crazy...then, the next year it is worth 25 grand....wtf....

so it looks like a certainty that GM will be bankrupt by Monday June 1. They're NOT going to make any miracles in a week. they're not making any profit. and doesn't seem like they care about quantity of car's sold since i haven't see any killer deals from them. they should be selling their cars for deep discounts right now if they cared.

Anyone who's been here for any length of time knows your modus operandi Lois. I don't know what's worse, the thread itself, or you denying your intentions.

GM needs to buy all of the used Accords on the market, rebadge them, and sell them as the Chevy Awesome.

Destroy the UAW? They are going to give GM to the UAW...

Neither Chrysler nor GM is going through anything close to a normal bankruptcy.

Right now the only thing pushing GM into bankruptcy is their bond holders. The bond holders want a bigger slice. They think they'll get that from a bankruptcy judge.

I question whether some you have ever read a newspaper, watched TV news, or gone to an internet news site?

A bankruptcy will not disband or throw out the UAW. The only time this would ever happen is if the union was uncooperative. The union has given GM everything they asked for, I don't see them being any less cooperative with a bankruptcy judge. They know who butters their bread.

Bankruptcy all the way.

GM really needs to stop getting behind the door handjobs from the UAW and negotiate some real union concessions. You're laid off? Too bad, get in the unemployment line. None of this getting 90% of your salary and full benefits BS. You're not at work ontime? You continually fight with your boss? You don't do what your boss tells you to do? YOUR ASS IS FIRED. No more hiding behind the union. The highly skilled such as maintenance workers or those who work in hazardous environments such as parts of a foundry, you get appropriate paycuts. Everyone else, either go fvck yourself b/c you're getting replaced by a robot or your pay is cut to $8-$15 dollars an hour depending on position and years of service. Don't like it? Get a job a WalMart! You're one of the several UAW reps per location who gets to wear jeans to work, sit behind a desk to surf the inet all day yet collect a stupid salary? You have a skill, good. Put on your uniform and do it if there is a need. No skill or no need for your skill, don't let the door hit you in the ass.

As a side note, my father retired from GM foundry. I have alot of respect for the skilled tradesmen and those who work in hazardous conditions for 12 hours per day. I have less than zero for the lazy and those who take advantage of and perpetuate this aweful system. I will hate and speak out the UAW any chance I get until the day I die.

Fire everyone...management, unions, everyone.
Close their plants.
Move out of Detroit.

Open new, sustainable, modern plants elsewhere.
Hire people who have never built cars before and don't let them unionize.
Hire a bunch of car enthusiasts to "dream" up the cars.
Hire some Germans to design the engines/suspensions.
Hire some Japanese engineers to design the electronics.
Hire some Scandinavians to design the interiors.

Sounds like win to me.

That's because Oblahma needs the Unions' votes for the next go round. Change? Nah, Bolsheviks redux.

so how do you guys predict the value of current gen (2008-2009) GM's if they were to be sold by private party? would they increase or decrease? i'm not talking about special edition limited quality vehicles, the ones that sell the most.
