I can only think that I would be acting at a very primal level. Call it panic, call it whatever, BUT those poor people were NOT in a normal state of mind. Such an event has two outcomes: Death by Fire, Death by Falling. With that many people in that situation, some will jump, some won't. There is no use in trying to understand why. There is only value in consoling their surviving loved ones.

as the third comment I wanted to add as I was reading this thread I thought hey, why don't they give people parachutes? I mean.. it could help for atleast *some* people right? just have to find out exactly how low you can go before it's not effective..

Yeah, parachutes would be a good idea if buildings were collasping everyday. BUT they don't. Parachutes would just provide a false sense of security. The idea BEHIND parachutes is good though... how can the evacuation system in large buildings be improved?

I have no idea, but I bet there are plenty of people who do.
