Could you butcher your own dinner?

I had to change the original question because people ignore most of the thread and assume that I am preaching vegetarianism.

I am not a vegetarian and have a question that basically boils down whether most people would be comfortable nowadays killing a cow, gutting, and butchering it so that they have steak.

My own opinion is that if I had to do it myself, I would probably look for something else to eat. Perhaps fish, since it is not as grisly of a process.

I dont think they cut the cows throat anymore...

I think they use a bolt to the head or something very similar...

Just give me the gun and back up...

This cow is dead meat...

Why the hell is it retarded? It's a theoretical question.

Really not even that huge of a stretch, you need licenses to buy guns, liquor, and drive.

I agree with outersquare: will do lots of unlicensed meat eating in that case. =)
Of course we can always "bribe" people to do the dirty work for us. Economists love this idea.

Alright, lets say you require a license to eat. Now, what happens if someone can't get the license? We just let them starve? Throw them in jail for eating w/o a license? Once they're in jail, are they still eligible for an eating license, or do they starve while they're in jail too?

edit: apparently the license only applies to BUYING meat, and not EATING it. So, I guess, you pay royalties to someone to have them buy you meat.

notfred - there are other things to eat besides meat. Your scenarios with eating and breathing would result in starvation or suffocation.

My scenario is similar to liquor for example. There are other things to drink besides liquor, there are other things to eat besides meat.

But yes, I suppose the unlicensed eaters would be paying a markup. :D

I understand your point, flavio. I realize that the meat I'm eating was once a living creature, and they had to kill it. It sucks, but I could never be a vegetarian. I'm a picky eater. :)

Well, if you're going to make a meat license required, why not force everyone to spend a day in the fields harvesting lettuce, or strawberries, or whatever, before they're able to eat that type of produce?

What about disabled people/old people/little kids? Are you gonna give a 6 year old a gun and tell him to shoot a turkey in the head? No? then he's not allowed to eat at Thanksgiving dinner? I still think the idea is dumb.

Imagine this:

Training lessons to obtain meat purchasing license. A guy hands you a knife points you to a pig and says go to it. For those who have no idea what they are doing this can be a messy adventure.

It's still a theoretical question notfred. We can deal with strawberries in another thread. I think most people wouldn't be to sqeemish about picking them though. So if your going to make me flesh out my idea (hey, a pun) we'll say 6 year olds are exempt. In fact you don't have to deal with it until your 18. and sure anyone old or disabled is exempt as well.

Hey, I eat meat...my girfriend eats meat. I am not sure if I could do the killing though and I know she couldn't.

CYLINDERMAN - HHEHEH...yeah, I wouldn't know where to start :D

<< What if in order to get a meat license everyone had to go to a slaughterhouse and kill and cut up the animal that you wanted the license for? For instance, if you wanted a beef license all you have to do is slice a cows throat, skin it, and cut yourself off a nice T-Bone or something. You do that once and you have the license to eat cows for the rest of your life.

Same goes for pigs, chickens, lamb, etc....

What percentage of people do you think would still be eating meat? I know some people I don't think would be able to do it.

The ease of getting it handed to you in a drive-thru is completely different than starting from scratch.

Step aside. I want first dibs on that steer. Seriously, I have personally shot and butchered out 3 deer and 2 boar (wild, not hunting with a 30/30 in a pigpen :D), not to mention many squirrels, rabbits, etc. I like meat. I have no problems with killing animals so that I can eat. I dont think that my ancestors evolved with the intention of me eating brussel sprouts. OK, well, my ancestors didnt intend to evolve... but still, mankind is an omnivorve. Unless you think that well have evolved in the past 200 years to eating sink washed veggies, human teeth are far too thin enameled to have been vegetarians. Our ancestors would have quickly become toothless due to all the grit found on vegetables. However, I do agree with your statement about the difference between starting from scratch and going to the drive through. Specifically, grilling the backstraps off a young buck is much better than a White Castle "slider."

You need licenses for those (Guns, liquor, and driving) because people take it for granted and ABUSE those privileges. And damn the people who say stupid things like "Well I could use meat like a weapon by swinging a slab at you... I can OD on meat..." and etc... Oh... I think there's going to be licences for neffing too because people tend to abuse blah blah blah nef blah

Lets also pass a law that says if you want to live in a house, you have to get out there and hammer the damn thing together yourself. How many people do you think would be homeless?

Maybe if you want to own a computer, you have to solder all all the circuit boards together yourself.

Maybe to drink wine, you should have to grow the grapes and stomp them yourself.

Maybe to smoke marijuana you had to buy a light, grow it in your closet..........Ummm nevermind, lots of people actually do that.

DAWeinG - Maybe peoiple abuse their ability to get meat. Since it just comes all packaged up in a nice shiny wrapper nowadays.

The point, if you missed it, was that probably many people would not actually be able to kill a cow, pig, or chicken themselves.

Got it? Ok then, proceed.

Flavio, I would have to agree with you. I don't think alot of people would have the stomach to kill their own animals, let alone gut and butcher them. The first time I cut a deer open I lost my breakfast, I still get kinda...ughh, but I just think "DAMN, is this venison gonna taste good!" :)

I helped my dad gut a deer when I was about 10 I think, it didn't bother me too much at the time. What really grossed me out was making sausage later. My dad brought home some fat from the grocery store and we had to grind up the venison while adding fat from another animal and have it spew out all churned together.

Nasty.

it because we were born to eat meat, our survival instinct requires it.
without meat, most of us would had been dead long ago and we would not be where we are today.
there is nothing cruel about it, they just happen to to be part of our food chains.
just like plant are food for them. a living creature yes but it order for us to eat it, must be dead and cooked very well. cooking changes everything chemically into edible.
the stone age people for example learned to hunt then discovered fire and that's how all these began.
who could give up meat so that these animal can run around lose and get run over by cars and that is worse, we are sorry but there is not much of a choice. in order to live you have to eat and a good meal can certain make your life much more enjoyable.
fish, chicken, beef and pork is a big part of most peoples meal that without it, they would be unable to eat.

cow's throat cutting is still the most popular method of cow killing due to kosher and hallal rules.
