Could we (TA) give something back to Berkeley

I am currently setting up a site for Seti @ home to use for new recruits, where all the files needed are in one place, and i was looking to see when Berkeley say the best time to connect will be.

At the bottom of the page, i noticed the following text:

<< To help us achieve a short-term solution, you can help in two ways:
  • Donate to SETI@home. This will enable us to buy network bandwidth.
  • Help us find "bandwidth sponsors". We hope that a major commercial ISP might donate bandwidth to UC Berkeley to help SETI@home. If you work for, or have contacts in, such a company, please contact us.
  • >>
Maybe we, as a TeAm, can donate some money to Berkeley, so that they are able to buy some bandwidth.

<< The issue is money - bandwidth costs about $300 a month per megabit, and neither SETI@home nor the university has budgeted for this cost >>

Maybe we can get some money together, and donate it to Berkeley, and give them something back.

This will only be a short term solution, but it will help them a little to sort out the bandwidth problem.

<< 300 per gigabit per month >>

Um.....maybe my limited experiences are just that: limited; but, I know for a fact that SLCentral goes through tens of Gigabytes and doesn't pay 300 bucks per gigabit

And then there's the second part: anybody work for an ISP around here?

Bump for all those to see :)

<< We've received enough donations from users to (at least temporarily) pay for
an additional 10 Mbps of bandwidth. So the University limit is up to 80, and
SETI@home will get at least 10 Mbps of that. There will still be connection problems
during the peak hours unless we get significantly more donations.

So thanks should really be going to the people that hit our donations page.
Thanks to everyone!

I kind of have mixed thoughts on donating money. The reason why is that we all donate our computer time and electricity. We are keeping with our end of the bargain while Berkeley isn't keeping up with there end of the bargain.

They way I look at it, we're sort of privileged to help in the project and I don't mind making a small donation to help fund the bandwidth.

Here here conjur.

After all, this is a scientific endeavour. When we donate anything to them, be it money or our computers' time, we give so that the project may go on. We also give because we have faith in the team of people running this project.

Everything we get back from our generosity, like stats, recognition, and so on, is in no way owed to us. I hate to say it, but anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand the meaning of generosity.

Is there any way the team can donate to one specific person/place, then make one huge donation to berkley, and maybe get a blurb on their front page? that would help with recruting :)

<edit>
We would need 10,000 for a "corporate sponsership" I think we could hit 2/3k easy but 10k would be a strech.

I like that idea too Evadman :)

I agree ,though if they don't have a long term solution it will only buy them a bit more time ,I hope they have a plan...........

Who would collect the money though?

I'm not sure who could collect the money

I have a PayPal account, but it's not verified yet, so i can only transfer $250 at a time. But it will probably be verified in a couple of days when i use my mum's card to buy some stuff.

So, as i won't have any personal funds in there, then if we want then i will volunteer my account to the pledge :)

If no one else wants to take the donations, I will set it up. I will have to see how to go about donating it tho, I can use my paypal credit/debit, but I think I will personally get the credit. I will look into this.

<edit>
Email sent to berkley, I will post when I get a response.

Just in case, I have already set up an e-mail of SetiDonation@evadco.com and set up paypal for it, just in case :)

People who don't run SETI tend to have accidents, be careful. :D

And people who don't run SETI and are moving to Berkeley within the next month can cause accidents, too.

Well IF any suspicious accidents happens at Berkeley, we have a good convincing piece of evidence!!!! ;)

Important Information About Your Donation:

Only 2% of your donation goes to the University of California for overhead. 98% directly finances SETI@Home operations.

What, exactly, does this mean? I would interpret this as '2% of donations go towards bandwidth, 98% of donations goes towards collecting/recording data.' If my interpretation is correct, our donations do almost nothing for getting more bandwidth for Seti@Home. Any thoughts?

This could mean that 2% goes to the school for whatever they want and the 98% goes to Seti. Hopefully that is the case and that all of that 98% goes towards bandwidth.

I'm inclined to think that MoFunk is right ,so SETI could use that monry for motr bandwidth if they wanted.

Btw ,what's the latest on the bandwidth troubles?

ColinP
lol ,you're on the same line of thought as me I see!

No offence to you or other volunteers of 'keepers of the money' ,but how do we know we can trust you? even if I trusted you (which I probably would) others wouldn't ,purely because you are unknown on a personal level. This same problem will occur with any other team member too.
The DMcowen situation was different (I donated to that) because there is a 'physical' place to pin the donation to (lawyers office) also it had fairly wide publicity showing the situation to be real.
The only way I can see around this would be for either Anand to 'host' the donations(which would take a very long time to sort out, if ever) or for you to broadcast your full name & address on the forums!:Q ,& understandable you'd probably wouldn't want to do that!,even then its no guarantee.

Btw I once donated to a TA member who said he(I forget who) was in need, something about a step daughter being taken away from her mum by her 'natural' father who was real bad news.I never heard what happened for certain ,though it may well of been legitimate (anyone know?) ,I realised afterwards that I had no proof of where my money went to ,so now you can see why I am suspicious. The only thing I can say about that donation was that no further money was unexpectedly pulled from my account:) ,though I was worried as hell when I started to think about it!

Sorry for the negativity :( ,I can't think of a solution to this problem......................unless SETI themselves can setup a TA donations account?
