make it so that a newly registered member woudl have to have reply to like 20 other posts before starting their own post? this woudl more or less eliminate all spammers who just register a name and start posting free ipod like crap

or make them wait 24 hours before starting their own thread.
 
It seems liek a good idea but some people amy get annoyed because they may sign up to get a support problem answered and before they can post there problem they would have to post in 20 other topics
 
i like anubis's idea a lot, but kooldrew has a good point. how could we implement both ideas so that it could work? hmm...

Chances are that their problem has already been posted and answered numerous times. At least that is what I tend to find.... thirty questions in two weeks, all with the same problem. If they did a search, they would probably find the answer already posted.

I dont know if I agree with a 24 hour waiting period, but I think a 20 post count before posting a new thread might work.

Perhaps the 20 post limit could apply only to certain forums?
 
Although soundsing good, I think it would harm the very people that get hooked on Anandtech. I got hooked on the forum after asking some questions about building a computer. These were my very first posts. Although spammers are a nuisence, we shouldnt alienate the people that we help.
 
I think if you just limited the 20 post rule to the FS/FT forum, you would avoid most spammers, and let people get all teh tech support they can/want !

Very true. IIRC, my first post to AT was a thread I created in the Tech Support forum asking for help. If you go there now you can see that a lot of people make their first posts/threads there. Some of them get the advice they want and never return, but others stick around.

Agreed. And while many questions can be answered by searching (ex. what's a good 19 cart?), many other cannot. Particularly tech problems which require a rather detailed explaination to diagnose. Even if one does a search and finds what appears to be relevant threads, often you must start you own thread because the advice doesn't apply(or it isn't understood).

We have new posters here (on the tech forums) on a daily basis, most if not all of them recieve help and are grateful. It generates good rep and karma for AT.

Some of these noob have nothing/very little to offer. They'd be forced to nef, or more likely just go elsewhere.

They should only be allowed certain words in the subject until after their provisional period expires. If they indeed need to use such a word in the topic at hand they could request permission from a moderator who would approve this based on their post.

Violators and users circumventing the list of subject words would be subject to immediate suspension of membership privileges that would include a reverse whois ban on all domains associated with the one they registered with.

I agree with fern whole heartedly. I was once a noob and wouldn't have been able to answer much questions correctly at all. I still question my ability to do that. 🙂
 
A thread-starting restriction is already enacted on many other forums and it works very very well. I don't see why we're not already doing this.
