Could Use some Advice...weird video issue

I have my stats listed below.....here is my issue.

I Just built a new system, and everything is working like a charm barring one thing. Everytime I watch movies my machine has serious problems after the movie is over (and sometimes during it).

What happens is....typically...the movie will be over and I'll just start to close Windows Media Player (or several others I've tried, Media Player Classic...VLC...etc) and things start to freeze up. By start to...I mean....the video slowly degrades and colored pixels start coming through in different spots through out the screen (random places and wherever I move my mouse), it's like a colored pixelated distortion, almost like the GUI is dissolving in to just colored pixels. It's kind of hard to explain I'm working on getting a screenshot. My cursor will do sort of a faded ghost thing, where it appears like there are like 3 cursors (one on each side of the real one) and then after about 40 seconds....it's a full lock up and I'm forced to restart.

I should note, this doesn't happen EVERY TIME, but I can recreate it often. It also isn't always the same, sometimes it's right after a movie, or sometimes in the middle if I pause it for a few seconds. But it definitely centers around movies only.

Games work PERFECTLY.....My CPU/GPU temps are fine. My processor rarely goes over low 30's © and my GPU never makes it much past 54c under extreme loads. So I've eliminated heat I think.

I've tried different CODEC packs, as I figured maybe this centered around that somehow. I use K-Lite Codec currently. I'm still not 100% on if it is a codec issue or not. On the one hand Quicktime is NEVER effected by the problem, I can watch quicktime based movies (embedded in browser or standalone) and it's just fine. But any other media player screws up. That makes me think it is codec.....BUT....I thought VLC used it's own codec mechanism so why would it be effected as well?

This really has me stumped and my only thoughts are Power, Heat, and Codec. I have the latest video drivers for my card (8800 GTS (G92) 512) so I'm guessing it isn't that. But I"ll let you guys be the judge

Wolfdale E8400 @ 3.0ghz
4gb G.Skill 800mhz Ram
Zalman 9700LED/Artic Silver Cooling
EVGA 780i MoBo
EVGA 8800GTS (G92) 512MB Card
Rosewill 600W Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16817182087)
Running Windows XP SP2 with K-Lite Codec
Haven't updated BIOS from stock (could be the problem I suppose but the mobo is relatively new)

Any help would be appreciated,

Looks like someone else has this problem.

I would agree with you that it is probably the codec. That sounds like a conflict between the codec and the windows basic GUI. I don't know a fix for this off the top of my head, but here's what I would try:

Uninstall the K-Lite codecs you have installed, reboot the machine, double check you have the newest windows updates and graphics card updates, and then reinstall the codec and see what happens.

Maybe before you do that though you should try looking at the event viewer (maybe run something you know doesn't work) and see if you can't find anything that could be causing problems.

Let us know...

I'll try the event viewer thing, that is a good idea....

But what bugs me most is that almost no one has had this problem....I can't find anything on forums barring that one tidbit you linked. Makes me worried.

Anyways I've also heard that it is super hard to FULLY REMOVE codecs.....even if you just uninstall there are still many things left altered.

If you think of anything else let me know....thanks for the help though

Do you just have the nvidia drivers loaded or do you have the full Nvidia software suite loaded? (just following a hunch here)

Or are you running the software that came with the video card?

Downloaded it off Nvidia's site using their little wizard to find drivers.

I didn't even crack the seal on the CD that came with the card.

As far as the full software suite...I think it was just drivers. Though I do have Nvidia Control Panel/Ntune running.

Hope that helps,
