Could this have fried my motherboard?

Ok here's the deal. I put a 1.1 ghz cpu in it yesterday and it posted no problem. I returned that cpu and got a 1.2. Now, before I tried putting it in and testing it like an idiot I decided to try unlocking it first so I got a pencil and connected the L1 bridges like I've been shown.

I put it in and nothing happened. It wouldn't even post. So I took the motherboard out of the case (I'd only tested the previous one outside the case) and still it didn't post. So I took everything out. Memory, cpu and graphics card to see if I even got the beeps I should and I got nothing.

The motherboard is the A7V133.

ok, more info, did it power up at all?.. have you tried resetting cmos?, have you tried "erasing" L1 bridges?..heh sorry had to say that one. But i seriously doubt you fried the board, i have done much worse...

Machine powers up. LED lights come on. Fans are nice and a blowin but nothing after that. Yes I did erase the pencil marks and tried again but that didn't work. Course it wouldn't if I've done some damage to it that can't be reversed.

Can't try another processor because I don't have one. I'm building this one and it's my first AMD based computer. All the rest in here are Pentiums.

SB,

I would try reseating your CPU, video card and RAM. Power is not the issue, are you getting any beeps? It's hard to diagnose the problem with so little info. Does it look like the system is even POSTing at all?

I'll try to give a bit more info but not sure what more you want. No beeps at all. I tried reseating the cpu. I took the cpu, the memory and the graphics card out. In other words just the board. It got power but I heard no beeps. Nothing but silence. No indication that it's posting.

Now, keep in mind that yesterday it posted just fine with the other cpu. So this is why I was asking if modifying the CPU's bridges like I did could have caused the motherboard to fry because it posted before. Or whether I somehow fried it in another way.

Since I didn't try it with the new CPU BEFORE modifying it I wasn't sure if it was that or something else.

Just so you all know. My own stupidity was at fault and yes the CPU was friend. Motherboard was fine. I underestimated the heat that the Athlon's generate and I tried to see if it would post before I'd put the CPU fan on it since that Taisol was a pain to install. I figured I'd just run it quick to see if it posts and then set things up.

Only took those seconds to fry it. Fortunately they will replace the CPU for me. Unfortunately I have to wait a few hours (Could have been worse) until they get a shipment of them in since those are popular.

You got a 1.2 gig cpu that was locked, ie blown bridges ?? That sounds really suspicious. Is it a 'Green' core by any chance ?? AMD replaced one of these Green core 1.2 gigs because it was 'fake'. My bet is that this cpu started life as something other than 1.2gigs.

Yes it was locked. L1 bridges broken. Even looked at it under a magnifying glass to make sure. I was surprised because everyone I'd talked to mentioned that theirs was unlocked. The Code on the CPU is AXHA.

I asked the guy about getting an unlocked one and one with a BXHA code but he said they don't specify that. They put in an order and whatever their supplier ships thats what they have to get. Sucks but this time I'll ask to see the collection and see if any are unlocked.

But I'll probably get it anyway even if its locked and all because they're local. I wouldn't want to buy it online and have the problems I've had. Would takes possibly months.

SB,

Ahhhh...I see now...forgot to mention the part about firing it up with no HS. Most people who unlock with the pencil method can just erase the damage but running that puppy w/no HS could do some damage.

Believe me guys. I know I lost major cool points and just wait till my friend finds out. I'll probably lose more and earn stupidity ones as well. But this time I put some nice thermal paste on that puppy and secured the fan and everything. Wasn't taking no chances this time.

But I'm happy to report that I replaced the CPU (Got the old 1.1 back from them. Saved me $53) and its posting like a charm. Everything is looking good except that I can't set up my X15s yet. I bought the ATTO ExpressPCI controller and was told it came with SCSI cables. Yeah it does. They forgot to mention that the cables were EXTERNAL. Sheesh. So now I'm just looking at the drives and crying.

I'll run out tomorrow and buy a couple of internal SCSI cables. Man I hate waiting.
