Could sound card/cd writer cause system lockups?

Hi,

I'm experiencing odd lockups in 3D games esp. with D3D. OGL games are fine though. Was wondering, could the sound card cause this problem? Or could it be my CD writer?

I've exhausted nearly all possibilities (except changing hardware). Using a BX mobo with GF2MX.

All the latest drivers? Are the IRQs seperate or shared between the devices?

List rest of specs of system, plus list the irq listings for all your devices...

list drivers and os for vid card, & sound card....

Did you install dx8? If so, when related to vid and sound drivers?

All latest except for DirectX. Doesn't matter anyway. DX7 and 8 does the same thing AFAIK, there are no conflicts of the sound card. I'm not sure about the CD writer though. Will check later.

P3 550 (Katmai)
MSI BX Master
256MB RAM PC133
MSI GeforceMX
Ensoniq Audio PCI (1371)
3Com 10/100 NIC

Primary master: 15GB Maxtor (forgot which model)
Primary slave: Lite-on CDROM
Secondary master: Sony CRX-140E CD/RW
Secondary slave: 5.1GB Quantum Fireball

I'll have to get back to you on the IRQ listing.

OS: Win98SE
Vid driver: NVidia 1241 Reference
Sound driver: 010105 dated drivers

I did that. I've tried installing DX8 after and b4 installing the sound card drivers.

Here are my system's IRQ settings: (those that are relevant)

5 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
5 Creative Sound Blaster 128
5 3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI
11 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
11 NVIDIA GeForce2 MX

Anything wrong there?

hmm,, this strictly just a guess.. but

you wouldn't have happened to install internet explorer 6?

i have had ZERO problems.. i installed that.. BAM!! 4 locks in like a 2 hour period..

Nopes, it's the stock version of Win98SE. No updates installed Guess I'm still back at square one.

Umm... I can give it a try. But isn't ACPI supposed to handle all the IRQ sharing?

Verified that it's not the IRQ conflict.... I think I'll try placing the GF2MX on another BX system I have...
