Could someone walk me through overclocking

I've read about 8.2 billion overclocking guides, so i understand the concepts, i'm just a bit wary about it, seeing as i've never done it before.

I'm running an asus a8n-sli (vanilla, not deluxe or premium), opteron 146 (CACJE 0607 - From the results i've seen on the web, these are pretty great OCers), and Corsair Twinx2048-3200c2pt memory.

I've heard that smartguardian will only work with some mobos... i can't find a download or anything that says it'll work ok with this mobo.

Anyhoo, right now CPUZ and Asus PC Probe II shows:

voltage: 1.392 (sometimes this dips for a moment to 1.372 and raises for a moment to 1.408... how come? PC Probe II shows 3.9 as well)

cpu is @ 34C and mobo is at 36C

HTT @ 201.0 (interesting... i haven't changed anything at all)
Multiplier @ 10
Core Speed @ 2010.3

Memory is at 2-3-3-8-1T

Please be as detailed and step by step as possible... i'd like to get into OCing, but it worries me slightly (mainly cause i just laid down a few hundred bucks for everything). My goal is 2.8ghz, if i can do it withnout going above 1.425 or so... (i'm using the old AMD stock cooler, though everything seems pretty cool... it's in a centurion 5 case which i pulled out the stock fans and put in a 2 scythe fans (replacing the 80mm with a 92 mm))

If you?ve read 8.2 billions oc guides, you should guide us, really!

You?re absolutely right; that is a great OC board!! But I?m afraid that the desired 2,8GHz are a bit too high for a proper system work. It is no problem to adjust it to that speed but for what cost and for what duration?
If it would be mine, I would play a little bit with OC Tools, AI Overclocker and N.O.S. before giving it the rest with true overclocking attempts. And this child?s play could look like this:

1. BIOS Update (Version 1013 05/20/2005) You?ll need v.1013 or higher for overclocking purposes (setting HTT over 220)

2a. Settings (Minimum)
HTT @ 200
Multiplier @ 11
Core Voltage: 1,40v

2b. Settings (Maximum)
HTT @ 225
Multiplier @ 12
Core Voltage: ~1,45v

I wouldn?t change neither the RAM nor the PCIe settings nor anything else and then trying to boot. (I personally would just change the CPU cooler and, if fits, replace the 92mm case fans with 120mm ones but that has perhaps more a silence or cosmetic reason than performance). If it?s successful then enjoy the new speed if not then back to BIOS?
And again just try HTT, Multiplier and CV until you?ll find the stabile setting.

Cheers!

right now i'm running prime95 after setting the ram to 333mhz, pcie clock to 100, pci clock to 33.33 and HTT3x (can someone explain that to me? I just read somewhere to set it to 3x, so i blindly followed). Multiplier is at 10x, and htt is at 260, ram voltage is auto, and cpu is 1.4

cpuz shows htt 260.8, core speed ~2608 memory @ 217.4 (that means ~435... is that ok for my ram? i haven't run memtest yet...)

Asus probe II shows temps of 47 for cpu, and 36 for mobo... is that ok? seems high to me, but i'm used to low low temps

Your system oc looks good just have to run prime 95 and mem test to find out how stable it is
Is your cpu 47c under load or idle? you might want to check into a better cpu heatsink & fan

I'm not familiar with your mb but this might help
You want to try and keep your HTT mutiplier X your cpu htt to equal around 1000. example htt 3 X CPU HTT 260= 780
you could try setting your mutiplier to 4 and see how stable it is

i would set the memory to 100mhz and see how high i could take the cpu
be sure to right your results down then start on the mem
