Could somebody explain to me why some people find Evolution offensive?

Intelligent Design taught in my home state of Pennsylvania.

I knew many people, some of them my good friends, who said they found the theory of Evolution to be disturbing or offensive. When I asked why, it usually had to do with disgust for monkeys and other apes and denying any human connection to them.

But WHY is it disgusting or offensive to suggest that humans may have evolved from ape-like creatures? They are animals that are no more disgusting than cows or dogs or kangaroos. Would people feel differently if we were said to descend from a more familiar animal like a cat? Why is it so offensive that a species could evolve to adapt to a wide range of environments?

It breaks down their diety and spiritual link to a supreme being, thier God.
In turn, the monkeys would be distressed to find how low they have sunk just by being related to humans.

why is ID even considered an "alternative" to evolutionary theory - i assume they will still be teaching all the standard concepts of biology, what possibly qualifies ID as an alternative besides its innate "proof by negative"

and why do you keep capitalizing evolution as if it were a mythos of some belief system?

I've never understood the idea that science and religion are irreconcilable.

there's nothing in evolution that lends itself to athieism... Darwin himself was pretty religious.

basically they believe that evolution can produce changes within a species, but cannot produce an entirely new species.

I'm not 100% sure of that, so someone else might want to jump in and explain further.

It's quite simple. The bible says that it did not happen that way. If it *did* happen that way, the bible is wrong. What else is it wrong about ?

evolution and xianity are not compatible, tho. (Unless of course you chuck out the Bible as literal word of god and make things up as you go along).
