Could precious metals be created in a particle accelrator?

Would it be possible to create gold, silver, platinum and other precious metals in a nuclear particle accelerator? With all those extra atomic "parts" flying around some of them are bound to create gold atoms and what not.

The downside is they would cost billions of dollars an ounce to produce.

yes, it is possible with gold i know, but it takes VERY VERY LONG. I'm talking 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to turn a penny?s worth of mercury into gold. I got that from my research paper...

How much mercury can you buy for a penny, and who will sell it to you? I'd like some.
