2/3 of Americans are overweight. We need someone fit and healthy to lead the country to a better lifestyle. Cut taxes, spending, and fat.
in order for universal health care coverage to work, we need the fatties so they die early, rather than having even more healthy people living into their 80's and 90's and burning through billions of dollars in end-of-life health treatment.

I feel like dying of a massive heart attack has got to be cheaper than providing care for dementia and parkinson's.

...or they can just lose the weight and live a better, healthier life. You liberals think you're God. You're not. You don't have everything figured out.

idk, that type of stuff in New Jersey is like being a mormon in Utah.

I, for one, love cutting your kids' music classes and after-school sports/activities.

but don't tell my family... they're all teachers and I have to stay very quiet when they start complaining about Christie while their union reps and board of ed members are making 6-figures.

Well the unions took cuts and freezes. I am not defending the unions, but as a governor he needs to do better. Overall the public school system in NJ is among the best in the country so that needs to account for something. You can't punish the students and sloth off responsibility solely to another party. And thats what he is doing.

you're missing the point.

people use the most health care at the end of their lives. skinny/healthy people live longer and in the end, use more health care than their overweight counterparts who die early.

and how do I get called a liberal in a thread where I'm supporting cutting school athletics, art/music programs, and extracurriculars? :sneaky:

I wonder if classy is being somewhat naive in saying, "You can't punish the students and sloth off responsibility solely to another party."

Sadly, that is part of the art of politics, be the real villain and then blame the other party for your villainy. The GOP does it it, the dems do, and they were doing it back in time ever since the time of the first democracy. Its Standard Operating Procedure in politics 101.

And the corollary is, if anything good happens, be swift to take full credit for it, even if you did nothing to deserve the credit.

Why shouldn't those who have put into the system benefit in the twilight of their lives?

You're still missing the point, Narmer.

loki is surpassingly fond of making twerpy, sarcastic points.

Without really knowing him irl, it's my guess that he does this so regularly and reliably here because he hates his meaningless job and his life as a somewhat overweight person of alternative sexual desires.

He's probably not even neat! He may not even know very many show tunes by heart, and there may not be even ONE frilly hot pink shirt in his entire wardrobe.

Gasp! He may not even much care what he wears!!

Narmer, don't you see? What man would have him? :awe:

Well I live here, he's quickly hitting thin ice. He needs to come up with ideas on how to generate money, just not tell everyone to take freezes and cuts. If he doesn't attempt to find some middle ground, he'll be gone in 1 term. Its one thing to have teachers and unions take cuts and freezes, but its not going over so well when you decide to pull so much funding from schools that things like music classes and freshmen sports are canceled. I give him 1 year to try find some new solutions or he will be a lame duck. I voted for him by the way. He is doing a slightly below average job of what I expected. But its still early.

i have a residence there and my family lives there and we understand the cuts are necessary.
i think he's doing a great job.

the only way he could improve is to kill the unions and their hefty pensions.

hey now, I weigh 165 and own 2 pink shirts :p neither of them are hot pink, though I do own a hot pink cardigan.

I just hate when people blame fatties because it's easy when in reality, it's your grandma and grandpa (or mom and dad) that are the true thorn in the side of health care costs.

I live in CT (work in NYC) with a NJ based boss. He loves Christie, if only because he's starting to dismantle the BS that's accumulated over the last couple decades.

The cuts were the beginning, more needs to be done. Raising taxes isn't going to solve the problem. Somehow NJ survived on lower revenue years ago, perhaps they should look at the programs, salaries, and infrastructure they had then and roll it back.

Nobody ever wants to do that, it's a tough decision and politicians are always afraid of those.

NJ may have good school districts, but they also have some of the highest taxes in the country. I was shocked by how much my boss pays in taxes.

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/loca..._agrees_to_freeze_salaries.html#axzz0o2DUxmwC

I live in one of the districts that agreed to freeze wages. Many of them have or stated will freeze salaries as well as cut certain positions.

Its stuff like this that's going to make him a one term governor.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/08/nyregion/08christie.html

This idea that all unions are bad and he is going break unions is foolish. Unions have protected working people for a long time in this country. Some things are bad with unions, but certainly don't warrant an all out war against them. And blaming them for every failure ain't gonna work. So far thats all he has done.

He took a million dollars in aid from our district, but we are rallying. Government has a part to play and he better quickly find that common ground or he will go the way of Corzine.

Well I was born and raised here. Well if he is dismantling the bs, its own parties bs. Because Kean drove us into debt and Whitman just promised her way into office and as a state we still have not been able to undo her nonsense. And I don't know what revenue you are talking about, because NJ did not go into a recession as bad as much of the country.

23 out of 600 agreed, so under 4%. better than 0% i guess.

lobbyists are scum. it is like legalized bribery. i have no idea how something like this is even allowed in this country.

unions are no longer necessary. competition between companies is too great and information is readily available to all. if there is any unjust abuse by an employer, it is easy to file a class action lawsuit.

i have to ask, how old are you? you must be 40+ because no one in my age group (mid 20's) is fond of unions.
i have a friend who was basically forced to be in a union and he hates it. he is a bright guy but has no incentive to strive to do better because everyone will get the same promotions and raises as he does, regardless of how much or little work they put in.
any system that is not merit based breeds laziness and corruption.
everyone knows this, and i genuinely mean this.

Meanwhile, going back to the original thread premise of "Could Jersey's Gov Christie Be Appealng Nationally"?

I think we can say two things based on this thread.

1. Christie has made a mixed bag of friends and enemies within New Jersey, but may not have much national name recognition.

2. His little 155 second exchange with the reporter has by in large not made it onto the national radar screen, and if Christie wants to have national name recognition, he is gonna be playing catch up football for a long time to people like Sarah Palin. So Christie is hardly out of the starting gate yet.

I think he did hit it. I posted the vid link at night. The next day Limbaugh was playing it and linked it on his site. The I heard it played on Hugh Hewitt show when Charles Krauthammer heard it and he said it was a grand slam home run. One version has over million views.

The thing I was wondering was that it's often said Reps. from the east (Gulliani, Pataki etc.) can't make it nationally. I don't know much about Christie since he's new but I think a lot of people (and not just GOPers) like someone saying what they mean and not always allowing the "escape hatch" as Christie says.

Maybe Danube point granted, the one 155 second Christie rant went over like gang busters on right wing radio, but the lone ride of Christie may or may not made him into an American household name. Given the American attention span is about zero, I still rest my case that Christie is barely out of the starting gate, and its all going to depend on Christie constantly staying in the news.

But I also wonder if the implied Danube question that, given the fact a Eastern GOP candidate did not GOP sell in the recent past, that therefore a Eastern GOP Christie candidate now can sell in the larger nation. Or citing Eastern twits like Romney or Guillani who lost due to their own defects, would otherwise sell if they were not Eastern politicians.

But as a responsible posters, I should never say never, rather than engage in pissing contests, let us wait for the fuller judgment of time. The GOP has to come up with one and only one nominee for Prez in 2012, and even if I doubt it, it could be Christie.

Any rightwing politician who can stroke the erroneous zones of the repub base will have national appeal. Just repeat the lies they already believe in, and presto! You're in!

Ask Dubya- he rode it all the way to the oval office...

Is that generality true for either Republirats or dimocrats. Just stoke the base and you are in?

In the case of Dubya in 2000, he did not win on intellect against McCain, he did not win on out republican mything McCain, W won because he character assassinated McCain for adopting a black Baby.

In 2008, its was Hillary that was supposed to be a shoe in democrat, even though there was hardly a dimes worth of difference between Hillary and Obama. Maybe lots of partisan rancor between the two, but at the end of the day, IMHO, Obama won because he was right on Iraq and Hillary had wimped and pandered, choosing the wrong but then popular side. And in that Iraqi pandering that Hillary blew it.

Ignoring who is governor for a moment, there are fundamental problems with how "business" is done. NY is similarly screwed (probably worse) and there's no chance it will change by any act by any politician.

In NY the trend has been to increase spending. That means raising taxes and doing so drives businesses and individuals who can afford to move (the higher income brackets) away. That in turn causes the tax burden to shift to those remaining. Hell they chased Tom Golisano out, the biggest philanthropist the state has had in decades.

So programs become barely sustainable in a good economy and everyone acts surprised that it doesn't work in bad times.

For now there is no solution because to close the financial gap means hurting people with more taxes or cutting programs that are useful.

Well no, they could take steps like welfare reform, but they won't touch that because they would be tagged as racists. Touch anything and there will be a group yelling.

There's the problem. People expect more and more. I had a woman who gave me hell yesterday at work because her eight hundred dollar plus worth of meds went up 30 cents. She refused to take it and is complaining to Medicaid. Her total tab was about 6 bucks. That sort of thing happens every day. Imagine if people had to give back in some way for what they are given.

I don't like political parties nor politicians for that matter, but they are exactly what we asked for and we tend to get what we deserve.

Reform existing programs (kick out the frauds) stop spending growth and as the economy recovers DO NOT GO BACK TO SPENDING MORE
