This. forced install of Quicktime is one of the main reasons that I avoid it like the plague. the extremely rare times that I encounter a web sight that requires Quicktime to view, i just close and decide it really isn't that important if they are using Quicktime. lol.

VLC or MPC tend to play most quicktime formatted stuff.... that said, you already knew this most likely, and I am simply the captain of the obvious. (A ship that sails on a very known timetable.)

I can objectively say that iTunes is a sh*tty piece of software. For my work, I use an iMac, and while Apple is good at designing software and OS that caters to casual users, there are a lot of flaws in their designs that are just fundamentally counter-intuitive.

With some of the recent stunts the people at apple have pulled, game developers would probably have to use apple approved software to code the game.

No more custom modifications because they were made with Valves Hammer Editor, instead of the apple approved level developer.

Sorry, I just do not see itunes getting into the gaming world

Can you expound on that? I have a friend who plays CS on her MBP and she has to go manually download most custom maps because they will not autodownload off the server propely.

I'm running a quad, 4GB RAM and a X25-M SSD, fresh OS install and iTunes is the worst lagging pos application I have ever used. The only time I launch it is when I need to update the OS on my iPhone. Everything I do with the store and music, I do from my iPhone. It doesn't even properly support DPI changes!

Not to mention the last update to 10.2? Once done, I was prompted to restart my PC. Seriously Apple? Software update and a restart is needed? What is it, 1998?

If there was another application to manage, sync and backup my iPhone, I would use it in a heartbeat, without looking back. The once in a few months OS updates are all I can take with iTunes.

No sane person would choose that over Steam, which has a great, fast and responsive UI. And intuitive. And tailored for managing games.

well, it's possible that I didn't already know that, b/c I'm not sure what VLC or MPC refer to.

As Captain of the Obvious, it is my duty to share
VLC Media Player (Video Lan player, no idea what the C is for)
Media Player Classic. (get the one that has quicktime alternative bundled with it)

The thing that makes Steam an authority in the gaming world, its tied in with Valve software. Valve = one of worlds leading game software developers.

^^ This

Valve has earned my trust in pretty much everything they do now. They make games for consoles, but have stated that they are going to make games for PC first. Instead of how a lot of developers have been purchased and make games for consoles then port to PC (always worse). Easier to downgrade controls, effects, textures, than the other way around.

Their steam app is fairly lightweight and is pretty stable nowadays. Many retail applications are often bloated with additional unnecessary files/applications. There are still a few features that people would like implemented, but valve works hard at trying to make sure they don't go overboard which leads to bloated software.

Valve continues to make free updates all the time to their games and software. The first DLC they made for L4D2 they wanted to be free to everyone, even for those on Xbox 360. Microsoft wanted to charge for the DLC, but valve fought with them over that stating they wanted it delivered for free. I think Microsoft charges for it, but I did read there is some DLC for L4D and TF2 that valve got them to deliver for free. Valve doesn't shaft their customers!

Valve continues to have great sales on games all the time. Hell L4D2 was going for $5 at one point I believe. In which you received all their updates and DLC for free. Summer sales and Winter sales becomes a time where you can buy games for 75%+ off. I know people complain about certain issues with being able to transfer games or how all the games are tied to an account, but obviously they should get paid somehow.

VS Apple... well apple is in it for the money. Look at their macbooks. You get the exact same internals in a macbook as another laptop, but charged $500-1000 more. If apple can get another dollar from you, they will.

I don't think gamers would go for it. You have people bitching about the tiny footprint Steam takes up on your computer, you really think people want to deal with that bloated turd called itunes.
