Could it be true? First pics of the new Mac Mini?

With such a tendency to get fake pictures floating around, I wouldn't put any faith in to that picture right now.

I doubt this is real because it has firewire. Apple has systematically removed firewire from all 'non-pro' devices with their latest refreshes. It makes no sense that they would upgrade firewire in the mini.

It does seem odd, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the biggest markets for the mini was the cheap server segment due to their energy efficiency and ease of deployment. If that were true I could see them leaving it for use as a gateway to an inexpensive firewire RAID array.

Still, I'm inclined to skepticism as well.

I'm so glad somebody pointed that out. I didn't realize, and have begun debating what to replace my aging/dying Powerbook G4 with later this year. I have a firewire external HD for backup purposes, and would have been pissed if I'd purchased a regular Macbook without considering this.

I'm skeptical.

Unless the photo was shot in an elevator, it cannot be considered a genuine Apple prerelease photo.

Also, why would someone with access to a prerelease Apple computer be using it on that ugly desk?

what is it with leaked photos being so out of focus all the time? you'd think people would know how to take a good picture!

The firewire port was removed from one product, the MacBook. Regardless of what Apple indicated, this was done to protect sales of the MacBook Pro. Apple probably felt with the other improvements in the MacBook, too many people would buy it over the MacBook Pro if it had a firewire port. So they removed it to keep as many sales as possible for the more expensive machine.

From the article...
For what it's worth, this is the second picture of a Mac mini seen by AppleInsider with such a port makeup, the first of which we were asked not to publish. While we cannot vouch for the authenticity of this new photo, it shows a Mac mini that is identical in every way to the system in the unpublished photo, which was said to be a prototype from last fall.

So this is a second picture that matches another that they received yet did not publish. That sounds like confirmation to me. I am guessing it is accurate.

Time will tell.

When will Apple move that huge and unsightly PSU on the Mini to a more interchangeable 90W MagSafe unit? Since nothing in the Mini is more power hungry than the components in a MBP I'd imagine that they could do it, couldn't they?

Why would there be two display outs? Much less of different types when most people would have to buy DVI adapters in either case? It makes no sense to me.

Dunno. I would guess so it could support two displays or single display with less need for an adapter. I am sure when Apple announces it they will explain why. 😉

Appleinsider now has a brief video.

Of course it could still be a fake, albeit a more elaborate one.

Throw in FireWire 800 & an updated Mac mini sighting before iMac and it's just too much...

😉

I was thinking the same thing, but then it might be targeted to the business more... have two outs for dual monitors for finance folks maybe. But that's such a small market, I dunno.

It would be very strange I agree, if this is legit. But part of me really thinks this is an elaborate hoax at promoting someone's design/manufacturing ability. cause that's a lame refresh =P

I don't think the dual jacks is the point, I think it's just a feature of the 9400m chipset - dual video outputs.

So...dual video outputs, 4 or 8 gigs of RAM, 500gb 7200rpm, newer CPU...sounds intriging 😀

hahaha, if apple puts anything larger than a 4GB limit on their next mac mini, I would think hell would freeze over =) But if it happened... I'd have to rethinking switching back to window, haha

A headless Mac with dual monitor support that doesn't cost $3000 (or even $1000) is long overdue.

Welcome to 2001 or thereabouts. Here's hoping it is true. (The video isn't all that impressive, not seeing it actually work. A person with good fabrication skills could piece together a fake backplate from a gutted mini fairly easily.)

apple has lost touch with reality called this year economy. nobody can charge this much for computers today and sell obsolete parts.
they'll need cheaper macs to stay afloat.

the picture was shown to be fake, that USB ports are not parallel with each other and that all ports are not in the same line.

if it supports 8GB of ram, has the 9400m 256MB, C2D 2.0Ghz, superdrive, and all that i/o, i seriously think that apple has a winner...provided that its under $700.

Apple sold more MacBooks/Pros last quarter than they ever have (at least based on what I recall reading) and although their laptops have outsold their desktops for a while, and all of the desktops are in need of a refresh, especially the Mini, I don't think they are in dire circumstances just yet. Particularly in light of the fact that they have something like 20-25bn in cash on hand.

umm.. they have $18B or something in the bank. I don't think they need to do anything drastic (eg, compete against dell) to "stay afloat."

While I do wish they would be more in line w/ the "PC manufactures" in price and availability (a true "Mac"), I don't see it happening anytime soon. Which is too bad for me, I likely will be going back to Win 7 sadly. Dealing w/ all the caveats of the hackintosh and reminded me why I took the plunge for an iMac way back, heh.
