could it be possible i have a bad wireless adapter

hi, i have the dlink 624 router...i turned off the super g mode stuff b/c the signal strength just drops completely. Anyway, I"m posting right now from a fairly good distance away.

the router is in basement, i'm 2 floors above.

my toshiba laptop has an integrated wifi and i get a 'very good' signal with it. 11mbit connection.

however, my dlink card can't even pick up on the network, this happens even if i go down to living room area..the toshiba will work perfectly fine anywhere in the house, the dlink, only if very closeby.

I have latest firmware/latest drivers for card...

i dunno what to do, i tried messing with all the wireless settings...wireless radio (on,off), extendted range, super g with turbo without turbo, none, 54g mode only, yada yada..nothing seems to help.


when i first got the router/card everything worked fine from what i remember, but ever since i upgraded the drivers/firmware things have gotten worse.

i remember at first when i didn't even have the option for 108mbit connection, i got perfect 54mbit reception everywhere in house...::sigh:: i'm sorta out of ideas, and i can't find the original disk that came with the card to even test if it's just the newer drivers..

but i can't understand how 2 different sets of newer drivers would degrade performance so much.

I'd try another firmware myself. They have 2.5 for revision C if you haven't tried it yet.

Came across a forum where someone tried another power supply and fixed the above mentioned reboot issue, and had peculiar affects on wireless results if you want to google it. In the same thread someone toasted the wireless part though.. but that was going from 5V to >12V.

Bah, resist the urge to blame sp2. I have yet to run into a legitimate problem involving it. Lot's of people complain about it, but most don't make any sense.

From my experience with d-link, I'd be more inclined to blame them. The point at which your wireless card plugs in may have a lot of interference generated by your laptop itself. Are you able to borrow another card?

What exactly is VDI-624? I upgraded to this firmware on the DI-624 I have and it caused all connections to cut off and reconnect every minute. It was annoying so I downgraded the firmware, same effects. I then went to exchange the router because of the problems. It's fine now with the wired computers, but the wireless computers still get cut on and off.

Any ideas?

i'll see if i can snag another card. I"m just all very suspect of these things now 😛.

i mean how can something go from working perfectly fine, to working quite crappy with driver and firmware updates...::shrug::

If you're talking about the DWL-G650 I would suggest trying one of the atheros drivers instead of the d-link driver. I can't remember where I got my version, but I do remember I found it on dslreports.com in the d-link forum.

but yes, i'm guessing it is a bad card as my toshiba works perfectly anywhere in house.

i can't take the dlink card more than 10-15 steps, before the signal is gone.


tried atheros drivers. worked for like 5 min, then the signal dropped and never came back.

toshiba still works fine.
