I have booked an hotel in Honolulu that only offers wired high speed internet.

Could I bring my own router and connect it to their wired connection so that I could have WiFi in my room?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I am not very familiar with networks.

More than likely yes. It is what I do so I know I wont have to deal with signal issues.

How do you configure your house wireless router as a bridge at the hotel? or do you preconfig at home first?

Thanks

Don't use it as a bridge. Use it as a router (if the hotel's network allows it). That way the hotel just considers it a single device in the room and you won't interfere with the operations of the hotel network.

Yes. I do this all the time with an old Apple Airport Express that lives in my suitcase. Works great. I don't need it often anymore, though. Many hotels have added wireless without updating their web sites, so I probably only use it a few times a year out of the ~150 nights I spend in hotels.

It should work, but remember to use WPA2 and a nice long key.

Really won't make much difference, since most of the traffic will be out in the clear once it hits the wired network. I've even been in some hotels that have "wired" internet, but if you look under the desk, the cable is just connected to a wireless bridge.

In the vast majority of the hotels I stay in, I see dozens of machines with their file sharing turned on, usually including a couple that don't have a password on it.

All I can say is be very careful to use encryption on anything important that's leaving your laptop, be it wired or wireless. Even if your signal is encrypted, the rest of the network isn't. Be careful!
