Nope. Never. Unless you somehow get your hands on a new Main board for it with the 1.7 on it.

And you say this why?

Because that's the right answer 😛

Wow that was informative.
Perhaps you could explain a little bit more... that is, if you know the reason why.

Because you can't remove the processor from a T series thinkpad and the rest of the Thinkpad models unless you are very good at desoldering many many pins... and then resoldering them.

You ask a simple question-you get a simple answer-or in other words DUH.

They are not soldered onto the boards they are socketed released by the turn of a screw.
Check the HMM.
Or as you put it... DUH.

Processors are DEFINITELY not soldered...I just took my T30 more or less completely apart earlier today, unplugged the CPU and everything. Put everything back together and I'm typing this reply on the T30 right now.

So I'm pretty sure that the processor on the T4x series is also upgradeable...just check the HMM for the T4x here. Have fun with it! I only wish I could buy your 1.6 Pentium M and use it in my T30...oh well

WackyDan - Where did you get the idea that the processors are soldered? That would not be a real smart move on the company's part, let alone how ujnpopular it would be with consumers.

My bad---brain fart is all i can attribute it to.

Although it will void your warranty with IBM by dropping in a 1.7. <---I know I'm right on that one. 🙂

Now that I will agree with. 🙂

Actually, I can warranty the 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7GHz P-M on the part number listed at the top. I have done it before too. Had a X20 that originally came with a PIII500 (soldered to board). Unit had a spill at some point and time and another service center put in a Celeron 500. Unit failed and they brought it to my service center and I warrantied the board for another Celeron 500 board without any problems.

Surely upgrading from a 1.6 to a 1.7 will be an exercise in spending money rather than actually noticing any real world difference in the performance of the machine?

I was led to believe that more RAM &/or a faster HD will produce better results - especially with the marginal difference in CPU speed.

i agree why spend all that money on a little difference, if it was free maybe, but even then, you have to tear it apart, well you know what i mean, i'd do it if it was free, but it probably wouldn't be worth it if i had to pay anything for it

I believe that many (most) ultraportables have their processors soldered on, for obvious reasons (rapid movement = misaligned processor). Most laptops however, you are free to change processors.

And to gtd 2000, real world performance will probably go unnoticed, but the bright side is that prices for Banias will most likely drop soon. I agree with your hard drive/ram statement fully.
