Could I lose my job over iTunes? :(

I was messing around with my CAC settings on my computer trying to update my certificates and I guess I messed something up. I couldn't log in anymore using my CAC after I restarted. No problem I thought, I'll just call the help desk.

Technicians can't fix the problem over the phone. They send someone physically over to to fix it. No luck.

They see that I have iTunes installed and Yahoo Messenger. They confiscate my laptop and tell me they are going to report me to security. I immediately tell my deputy director who tells the director.
Turns out the reason my computer is not working is because they found a virus on my computer .................. as a result of third party applications. :rolls eyes: That's B.S. Computer is not working because I was trying to update my certificates and I goofed something up in the settings. I would assume a 'system restore' could possibly fix the problem but they said they do not allow that.

Now I'm worried about losing my job. Tech people are making a huge freaking deal out of this IMO because they can't solve the issue.
Guess I'll find out Thursday.....

Where do you work? If you signed a computer policy, you can be fired over it.

If you work government, you are double screwed.

We see a lot of third partys apps on our laptops/computers, but we haven't fired anyone over it, and yes, they do bring it a lot of virus's. Not just the third party apps, the crap they browse to.

DoD policies are pretty cut and dry about this.

DOD computer systems are provided for the processing of official U.S. Government information only. This system will be monitored to ensure information security, system integrity, and the limitation of use to official purposes. The use of DOD computer systems constitutes consent to monitoring as an integral part of system management. Information derived from system monitoring may be used as a basis for administrative, disciplinary, or criminal proceedings. If you do not consent to continued system monitoring, exit this system now.

No music or anything was on the computer. I just had iTunes installed to sync the calendar to my iPhone.

looks like I might be joining the unemployment lines.

iTunes runs like smashed assholes on PC for some reason (hmmmm). Looks like your case may be a question of how well you're liked by your superiors, and whether or not they have any leeway. The IT guys there sound douche-tastic.

Your work computer is not your personal computer. Repeat after me. Your work computer is not your personal computer.

Dunno why people ignore the IT guys when they say: "this computer is not yours." I personally tend to ignore itunes at work and the like until it causes a problem. Sadly it is getting harder and harder with the metric crap ton of stuff apple keeps on cramming in to that installer. Then again after fixing a system more than once I revert to the network imaging system to fix the problems also.

lol ~ you screwed yourself messing around with something you shouldn't even have been messing with.

I disagree if you're refering to the CAC middleware. If I let someone else log on my workstation, their CAC gets stuck in the box. It's a pain in the ass to get their certificates out of the default pop-up.

:awe:

Actually, if he's an employee at will, he can be fired for this regardless of whether a computer policy even exists. Heck, he can get fired for no reason whatsoever or any reason that's not protected under law. I'm pretty sure that the right to iTunes isn't protected under law.

Non-union? This will be their excuse to free up some "cap space" and save the teh Department some money.

Good luck finding another job, hopefully one with a more open technology policy.
