Could I have Microsoft send me a new XP disc?

I bought a used computer a while back that has XP Pro installed on it and I would like to reformat it. It has the Microsoft sticker on the side the says "Windows XP Professional 1-2 CPU OEM Product" with the CD key under it. Would it be possible for me to call Microsoft and give them all the info on that sticker and have them send me a new disc?

Odds are slim. I believe it would be ok to find someone with the software and make a copy of their CD.

i just did this. they charge you $30 for a new cd (which is worthless without the cd key). id check with the OEM first.

What number did you call? I have a Windows 2000 Offfice Professional CD that just went caputs (sp?).

The problem with calling the OEM is they are clear out in Las Vegas and I am in Oregon and I don't have long distance.

I was looking for this very thing over the weekend and I remember seeing something on their site that said you needed to contact your OEM provider.

Search for "replacing media" or "media replacement" something like that.

find a friend with the same brand computer and borrow their CD but use your serial number.

Nobody I know has this brand of computer (Its a Holman's)

Maybe I'm uninformed here, but does it matter? Won't any copy of XP Pro work just fine with the serial number that you have?

OEM keys are different than retail keys.

The large OEMs (Dell comes to mind) has special XP CDs that only work with Dell computers. Having said that, you will be able to use a generic XP CD on any Dell, but not a Dell CD on any generic computers.

They won't work.

Yup, what he said, and on a side note if you were to get a DELL OEM CD then it'll only run on a Dell machine. Those bums!

I would just DL a CD and then use your key.
You own a license to use the software, so I don't really think it's that bad to do.

But surely you have a partition or backup copy of XP that came with the computer?

Yep. I have tons of Dell OEM XP Home CD's that came with our last purchase at work. We use XP pro but they were free with the purchase.

Nope. Like I said, I bought it used and it didn't come with any discs.
