You're under stress. You can't coast through college like you could through public school and it's freaking you out. Stress ruins your ability to concentrate, which is what is screwing your memory and your ability to understand what other people are telling you. Calm down, take a deep breath, relax, eat right, and get more regular sleep and exercise.

edit: Speaking of "coasting" through high school, I can't believe they let you graduate with your writing skills (or lack of). Maybe if they hadn't gone so easy on you then, you wouldn't be having such a hard time right now... but then again, it was your fault for coasting instead of applying yourself IMO.

you need to slow your brain down and learn to process information properly. Just slow down and cut down on things that make you hyperactive.
There maybe too much going on in your thoughts, clear your mind every morning by zombie-ing out/meditating.

You should record your lectures. That way you can actually listen to what the teacher says and take brief notes. Then you can go back to your room and re-write notes at your own pace from the recording..

I am assuming you read the lecture material in advance.. and outline your textbook and anticipate lecture material.

Get a good book that will help you improve your concentration.

THis is just your brain on drugs, maybe you have an inverse case where you need to take drugs to be normal, just a guess.

Buy a voice activated tape recorder to take to class. Don't take notes, other than graphs and such. Just sit and listen, give your attention to the lecture rather than to your notes. Good luck. I had the same problem.

Um, sorry to ruin this thread but I think you may want to look into dyslexia. I know most people think dyslexia is just reading things backwards but it isn't. Dyslexia just means that you brain processes information differently than a "normal" person. There really isn't much in the way of treatment but there are methods of learning that can help with retention.

Being dyslexic myself I know how hard it can be to be in a class where everyone else seems to "get it" while you are struggling. Don't give up hope and I would really recommend going to the Disabled Students office and ask them for information.

You have to do what is best for your Self, especially in this situation. What if you do have a disability? At least get this worry off of your mind, it is simply a negative cycle of thoughts.

nick1985, that totally sucks man...

i know it`s not gonna solve the memory problem but maybe you need to speak to your school`s health center? they might give you some advice on where to go and get help...

also, try speaking with your professors and ask them if they could speak slower...

let us know of any updates...

goodluck man, i hope you do well.

OMFG! speak slower cause of dumbo? i hope the rest of the class finds out and beats you making the lectures slow. he is in college now, not grade school, if he cant hang he should take an easier class or dropout all together; dont even suggest making the class slower for everyone.

I think it's b/c you have a lack of concentration (or focus) which is caused by insufficient interest in the subject discussed. When I was younger I also frequented lectures and couldn't grasp any sense of them b/c I just didn't care. Not long ago I visited a series of different lectures and I still remember most of the information b/c I was truly interested in the subject.

Ameesh, what do you have against this guy? How do you know he is stupid and not really suffering from a memory problem? Why do you have to come in here and bash this guy? Because he asked for advice/help?

Sounds like you need to sleep more. If that doesn't work, go to a doctor. While I tend to agree with Dr. Ameesh, I'd get a second opinion too. ;)
