Could I create my own domain extension? Say I want to start .music or .violin Is there an underground path to this? Like broadcasting the name and host resolutions to DNS servers?

Suppose i setup a network with a good connection, setup my domain as .violin and setup little subdomains like good.violin or bad.violin ???

In short, no. ICANN must approve all top level domain. There are groups that offer alternatives such as alternic but for the most part they are worth less because most peoples name servers won't resolve those addresses. So you can, but you can't ;)

Say I wanted to setup something local around the city area. Do you think I could get local isp's to put these new domains in their DNS? Or is there another authority that will get in the way? Is there anything that would stop an ISP from entering something like

website.tom 255.255.255.0

in their nameservers and it actually working as long as the client end user's DNS was set to look to an ISP that had it in their nameservers?

Sorry man, thats not quite how it would work, but still no ISP will do that, and second probably 1/3 of the people in your area are on msn/aol/other national service so it wouldn't be practical.

You can do what ever you want as long as you do not use the Internet. On the Internet your are bound by the Internet rules.

Build your own server, and your own domain. Then you have to make a decision.

1. You could apply for a license to wire the neighborhood and connect your entire subscriber pool to your Server.

2. You can buy an arrays of dial in Modems, and let people dialup to your Network (probably need license for such a service too).
