The Advocate has learned that concurrent meetings took place Monday morning at the White House and on Capitol Hill that could help clear the way for “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal to be attached to the Department of Defense authorization bill later this week.

and potentially all thanks to Joe Lieberman, the guy who was supposed to be McCain's 08 running mate and progressive enemy number 1? :hmm:

Someone recently asked if we should be worried about illegal immigration when there's a spill in the Gulf. This is really an unimportant issue in the grand scheme of things. Overall i would say allow it so people will shut up about it. Might include an exception for combat units like with women.

The government can do more than one thing at once.

I would hope. Government should never be allowed to discriminate.

This. People should be judged by abilities and content of character not sexual orientation and the rest we all know.

What's "this" I'm confused....

If women can hack combat I see no reason for them not to be there. My wife is sorta a tomboy (trains horses) and could whip and out shoot half the men I know.

The propaganda the enemy can generate from a capture female soldier has more emotional effects to the public than that of a captured male soldier especially in this age of keeping the public opinion happy during wartime.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought women are not allowed to serve in combat positions, such as infantry.

You are correct - however, there are other positions that can expose them to combat.

Women should be allowed to be snippers. They are more emotionally balanced and it would reduce sexual harassment of women to zero after a number of friendly fire accidents in the field.

Not sure if this is a typo, but it's brilliant either way. :D

The false propaganda by our Government about a captured female soldier and used to enrage the public during wartime, counts for what?

edit for on topic; Excuse me but why is a congressional repeal needed to reverse an executive order? Am I mistaken?

So what do they plan on replacing it with?

Dont' Apply, and dont ask?

They have to change the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) to change and laws for the military, because civilian law does not apply to the military. This falls under DOD. There is a separate court for military matters.

Feel free to try to change this. I think to change something like this the joint cheifs of staffs all have to approve it. I have no clue how these laws work, or why it has not been changed up till now.

if this gets done, Lieberman will have done more for gay rights than Obama.

Didn't RTFA but the snip you posted makes it seem like Obama is working with Lieberman on this?

I agree with you on Obama btw, much too little done. That hospital visitation legislation was thin gruel.

Here is an exert from the process to approve the existing UCMJ. It has to come from and be approved by all the branches of the military.

Records relating to the preparation of the Manual for Courts-Martial, united states, 1951. 1950-51.
On February 21, 1950, in anticipation of Congressional approval of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the Judge Advocates General of the Army, Navy, and Air Force met with the General Counsel, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and
7
agreed to proceed on a joint basis in the
preparation of a manual for courts-martial to
implement the Uniform Code. Col. William P.
Connally, Jr., Assistant The Judge Advocate General
for Military Justice, Department of the Army, was
instructed to direct the preparation of such a
manual.
