Could closing explorer.exe cause this kind of problem?

I closed explorer.exe (via task manager) and tried running a 3d game. Everything seemed ok, except when I exited the game, and rebooted the system, my screen looked like THIS. I then tried a shutting down for a minute, and restarting, but that did not help. Strage part was, even while rebooting, the screen still had these artifacrts. Even when I entered bios. Anyway, I was able to uninstall/reinstall my video drivers, and the problem seems to have gone away.

So could closing the explorer shell cause a problem like this? Or is there something deeper wrong with my system? be it hardware of software related. My first reaction was, closing the explorer shell and running a game corrupted something in my video drivers. But is that even possible? And if so, would the screen remain this way during the reboot, and while in bios?

Anyway, I know this is probably a strange question, but i figured this would be the best place to ask.

If it's artifacting in the BIOS, it's not an OS/driver issue as neither have been loaded at that point. Most likely culprit is the video card and too much heat. Are you overclocking it? If so you might want to back off a little. Also, taking steps to reduce system temps (esp. video card) would be a good idea.

According to my bios, my cpu temp is 48 degrees, and the case temp is 24 (XP 2400, 9700 NP). I've never over clocked anything either. I've been running this set-up for over a year without any problems. No crashes, freezes, or artifacts what so ever. That I can remember at least. This only occurred directly after exiting explorer.exe, running the game, and rebooting.

Also, the first reboot I did, the artifacts did not occur in bios. It was only after a hard boot, and another reboot, that the artifacts showed up in bios and during the boot up process. Is it possibly for the distortion on the monitor to temporary lock up the screen. Just giving the appearance of artifacts?

Anyway, like I said, I didn't have any problems before and haven't had any since reinstalling my video drivers. I'll definitely keep an eye on things for a while though. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. Thanks for the reply

Closing explorer isn't going to cause problems like this. Heck, I never open explorer. I run a different shell.
