<< Not too tempting in my opinion... 5400rpm drives are slooooooooow. >>

too slow for what? depends what you plan on putting on it. if you want some cheap storage for your mp3 collection these drives are great. it's not like your music is going to play any faster on a 7200rpm drive. and is there really anyone here who can't wait an extra couple of milliseconds for their word document to open? 5400rpm drives are fast enough for almost every application and they run cooler as well.

None of the Staples in my area have any of these drives. Has anyone actually seen/bought one?

Should I go get this Maxtor drive for $79.94 or get a used WD 60Gb 7200rpm for $84~$90? All I need is storage for MP3 and Files.
BTW, is there any instore coupon I can use for this deal to make it more cheaper? If yes, can I find the coupon online?

Thank you for your time,
Howard

These do exist. My local Staples (Summerville, SC) had at least 15 in stock. Scored 2 and let me use the $10 off $40 on each (2 transactions for 2 receipts). The model is K03H060G. $70 AR is a pretty good deal IMO.

Did the deal with the Symantec Norton SystemWorks to get $30 off $150, and will end up getting the drive for $50 plus tax -- SWEET!:)
The Symantec Upgrader rebate will take ANY Norton product, so it is pretty easy to qualify.

For anyone who is still looking for this drive in Arizona. The Staples store in Mesa still have at least 2 left.

I got one at Staples and used a $30 off $100 coupon (sleekdeals.com) so my cost will be $50 = Tax after MIR.
This will be a slave to my 100g WD (backup data and Ghost image files).

Rottman, the code on sleekdeals is not $30 off $100, but $150. At least I couldn't get it to work on a $100 order. The same code was posted elsewhere and was labled also as $30 off $150.

XCLAN, you have an email! :)

5400 rpm is old, fading technology.
Would you get a 3000, 3600 or 4500 rpm unit today?
Why buy obsolecence? 7200 is 1/3 faster than 5400. Twice 3600. (Duh)

OTOH, *cheap* 5400 like this would do quite nicely for certain uses, like .mp3 or as a hot backup. :)

Dunno' if heat / noise / longevity are real or phantom issues or related more to specific models.

Its definitely a good deal.

First of all, noise and heat does make a difference! Especially for those who uses a smaller case or have their PC in a tight spot.

2nd. Have you seen any statistics that 7200rpm drives being 1/3 faster than 5400rpm drives?!
I doubt that 7200rpm drives are 1/3 (thats 33%!!) faster than 4500rpm drives in real world situations. The buffer and interface makes the biggest difference.

3rd. Price: Whats the best deal for a retail box (or anything with 3 year warranty) 7200rpm you can get right now? ~$80-90? If you compare the deal now (~$64 out the door) vs. $90 for a 7200rpm 60gig HD, the price difference is almost 40%. Even at 1/3 the performance (I'm saying its no where near that much), its a decent deal. Factor in the noise and heat factor, then it makes this a great deal!

BTW, many STAPLES store are catching on to the coupon code usage. My local one never asked for one until now. They argue that if theres no printable coupon, its probably staples.com only. I used to just tell them the coupon code, and then the amount off...

I just noticed I made a typing error when I said $30 off $150, Its $30 off $100 like I said in my first post. Go to Sleekdeals.com Looks expired now.

Here's a "copy & paste" from their site:

Staples.com $30 off $100, code: 71583 Apr 13, 2002

<< 5400 rpm is old, fading technology >>

I'm not sure about that, the "Capacity Family" drives from Maxtor, e.g., the new 160GB drive still use 5400 rpm. Granted they are not performance leaders, but still adequate.

I'm putting this drive in the new Duron 1G box I'm building for my son, who by the way is 3 yr old (you can never be too soon to get the geek training started :)), so in my book this drive is more than adequate.

Good for you if you got it to work on $100 order. I tried that code and it would not work on orders less than $150. That same code was posted in FW thread as a $30 off $150 too. But, too late to use it now anyways...

I got in on this, with the $30 off 150 coupon, plus the Norton SystemWorks for $50, minus the
NS rebate of $20, the NS upgrade rebate of $30, and the Maxtor/Staples rebate of $20.
$120 out of pocket now, hopefully $70 in rebate coming. Not bad for $55.40 net. (incl tax)

The two I got were clearly former Quantum drives. However, they are very, very, quiet running in my RAID 0:)
