Could Abit be that stupid?

Well, after a sh!tload of research on the topic, I think I can attribute my computer problems to Abit:
If you looked at my previous thread, you will see that I swapped more or less everything (and stressed every device) in my computer.

After formatting and reformatting, I think I have narrowed it down, XP finally gave me a hint: scsiport.sys

After looking through the entire MS q&a I finally come to a part (where a person has the same problems I do) and I finally see the problem: 2 of the exact same RAID controllers in the computer crash when using older drivers.

I am using an Abit IT7-max which comes w/2 highpoint raid controllers (and yes, I am using both of them)
I updated highpoint's driver to the newest one (released only days ago, when I got my mobo they werent even out yet).

I don't know if that will solve the problem, but if it doesn't I'm gonna have to turn the freaking thing off through bios.

Abit, you have screwed up in the past, but having a mobo that makes 2k/XP crash because of the components you used, that goes beyond my BH6 woes.

using a Th7-II with a highpoint raid controller no problems whatsoever

I am typing it on this comp right now perhaps an IRQ conflict between the highpoint and another one of ur devices

Sound Card, NIC, TV Tuner no conflicts for me either

also did you disable ur AC97 onboard sound?

Nah, its only when you have DUAL raid controllers, not only 1

I can hook 12 devices into my IT7

Create SB Live!

oh my bad

do you really need 12 Devices :Q

I woulda went with a BG7 or a P4 B533 -V for an ideal DDR setup

Yes!😀

As you can tell my nick, I gave up on them a long time ago. Too many headaches caused by the Abit boards I used.

You buy Abit you get A bit of problems all the time.😉

I gave up on abit after that Kt7-raid hell i went trough (lowpoint problems here too),Abit never again.

I think they should stay away from highpoint chips on their boards, most of the problems are from those crappy lowpoint drivers.

Damn it, Abit never again here too.

This will be my second and last one. My BH6 really crapped out on me and this one is giving me no better luck.

Asus from now on, never had a problem with them...*sigh*

Just looking over my list of RMA's this year...

Manu Sold RMA'd

Asus 213 42
Abit 77 2
ECS 490 8
Soyo 29 8
Tyan 11 0
Gigabyte 8 0
Epox 3 0

DC

Well, no luck with the newest drivers or BIOS *sigh*

Looks like I'm gonna have to disable the RAID controller...annoying as all hell.

The only reason I went for this was the cool 12-devices.

Anyway, I guess that it is all luck...I could be those 2 of 77 that should RMA 🙂

Regarding your original post, it sounded like you meant the memory compability problems that plauged many of Abits BX boards were due to "noobs"?

Lets face it, Abit has a less than stellar history when it comes to quality, noob users or not.
I've worked with Abit boards, and haven't had any problems personally, but OTOH I don't see why they should be any harder to use than any other boards, so the "noob" comment seems out of place.

Just cause you don't have problems doesn't mean there isn't a problem with the board.

I love my KR7A-Raid and everyone I know raves about Abit, but I know you can't keep everyone happy.

Just to point out what's painfully obvious here, rather than using "older drivers" why didn't you just update? Duh, I mean, that's why they issue update and I'm certain the one they just released isn't the only update they've put out. Even if it was, it takes time to isolate some issues, and then to properly address them...

I thought there was always a problem with two IDE or SCSI controllers that were identical with windows products. It was always suggested that you have different products just from the standpoint of working with the correct driver/card.

Next question: why do you need to hook up 12 drives? 8 of those having to be hard drives? That is a lot of power being drained from a power supply when a larger drive would be cheaper and cause less power issues. If you are only running the two drives that are listed in your rig profile, then why don't you just disable the onboard controller and stick with the add in card?

And on another point: do you have both the onboard sound enabled AND the SB Live? or did you simply forget to delete the one from your rig profile?

Wow, Asus boards were RMA'd 1000% more than ECS? You need to fire someone....

I wouldn't suggest Asus to anyone anymore...they've started out-sourcing their manufacturing of their MBs and they completely suck now. I know a number of stores that have stopped carrying them altogether due to their RMA rate.

To answer your questions:

I updated to the latest bios/drivers and it still doesn't work

I have 3 HDDs, 2 optical drives, and a zip drive (antec truepower 430, its not even close to its max)

I disabled the onboard sounds, and yes it is annoying to disable the onboard raid device

I bought this mobo BECAUSE of it, now I have to disable it *sigh*

I guess its back to the Promise ATA/100 card I used before....

and yes, windows always has had a problem with it, with improper drivers. I know people who have 3 promise cards (all exactly the same) and have no problems...its the crappy drivers, not the hardware that I'm flaming

First off, I'm just the guy who handles store issues...can't really fire anyone, kinda like a demi-manager.

I still have a box of crap for ASUS. Aside from the A7V333 being defective, every single board reports the voltage at 13v, which scares my customers to no end (try explaining that it's a defect that just has to be lived with), and ASUS has no interest in fixing. The A7V-133 is the single biggest problem I've ever had in my 8 years in this industry. I had one order for 40 machines early last year, and we of course outfitted them all with retail box A7V-133's, 14 of them need to be replaced. I'm still amazed we didn't lose the customer forever.

ECS on the other hand, hasn't been a problem.

Argh, nothing seems to want to work, I took out RAM (which I know works...I stress tested every bit on it) and replaced it, gonna try win 98 now...I've tried every other win OS
