Could a new major religion start in today's world?

I was thinking about the origin of religions. Back in the old days, information was very geographically limited. You weren't aware of the other religions of the world. I can see how religion can pop up in a non-educated isolated world like that.

In the modern world, where information flows freely around the globe, do you think a new major religion could be created?

Scientology anyone?

Is Scientology that major? I'm thinking something on the scale of Christianity.

I'd say scientology is big enough. Maybe its just the famous people marketing they get that makes it seem bigger? When did it start?

Its a good question though. Anything is possible I guess.

The information certainly flows, but the quality of the information, or intelligence to filter said information, is sorely lacking.

I don't think it would be easy to build a truly *major* religion, but things like the internet, texting, cell phones etc have made a good environment for building a nutty cult (like scientology) pretty quickly. All you need is some gullible idiots, and then some starpower pushing the cult, and voila.

Mormonism isn't that old and already has quite a following. I doubt any modern religion would ever become as popular as Catholicism, though, as organized religion in general seems to be losing popularity.

Would you know a new religion if you saw it, or understand it if you were told about it?

What if someone you know, maybe even posting on here, had some deep insight into consciousness and humanity that eludes nearly everyone else and they were willing to share that knowledge with you.

Would you laughingly scoff about it and ridicule them because it made you insecure in your beliefs and you failed to understand it, or would you actually think about what someone said and try to apply it to yourself?

I think everyone has the spiritual capacity to be a lot more than they ever are, and I don't mean materialistically or career wise.

Unfortunately, most people usually squander their short existence without ever really thinking for themselves as they should or becoming spiritually enlightened. And out of that spiritual insecurity many then prefer to drag others down to their level with them. Misery loves company.

And for those misguided people death is as certain after life ends as the fact a rock has no immortal spirit.

It seems most peoples spirits just give up after they die, and many others get lost, but a very few enlightened souls actually move into the next realm.

Especially if it were cleverly disguised as a grassroots movement. We see this in politics.

Can I get an interview with those enlightened souls?

Yep. Look at the theological transformation that the Southern Baptists have undergone in the last 30-40 years. The Southern Baptists of the 1920s probably wouldn't even recognize the modern theology of the sect.

It is so sad that you go through life without opening your mind to the realization that the rock does in fact have an immortal soul!

If you do not believe in the rock's soul, you will not pass through them onto the other side.

The next widespread religions will be ecumenical hybrid religions.

Not counting organized "non religion", which will essentially be atheists rallying around the one thing they all agree on: there is no God.
There are already organizations taking root, and people starting things like atheist "sunday schools" (obviously they don't call it that) to teach their kids morals and values without influence of any religious beliefs.

Which leaves the path open for a better religion. Invent a god that doesn't think you're a piece of shit, one that doesn't deem you unworthy, one that doesn't want your money, one that doesn't want to consign you to hell for eternity to prove he loves you, one that doesn't ask you to do stupid things in his name, one that doesn't ask you to get up early on weekends and one that expects you to enjoy life and you should be successful.
