Guys, I was wondering if anyone ever had that happen? I am not a heavy smoker (less than 1 pack per month), however around 2 years ago I probably went through half a pack a day....

I'm wondering if I should go straight to the doctor, or if its somewhat normal to have that happen, especially if it only happened once clearing a very sore throat in the morning..

any fever/headache/malaise (tiredness)?

Not a bad idea to go to the doc in case it's strep.

I'm pretty sure coughing up blood is not ever normal. Dr. 40Hands recommends you see a doctor with a PHD.

The same thing happened to me a while back. Well, it was more like I spit it up with some mucus than coughed it up, but it was in the morning when I had a sore throat. I'd say don't worry unless it happens again. Also, I don't smoke.

If it wasn't too much blood and it only happened once then you probably just had a sore which bled a little and you coughed it up. Seeing a doctor never hurts though. I used to go through about 1/2 pack of cloves a day and I did it for 5 years straight. I never once coughed up blood.

If you've been coughing hard enough to tear a blood vessel, you should see a doctor. If the blood is dark or if you see anything black in whatever you cough up, get to a doctor quick.

Aren't MD-PhDs usually in research and/or academia, though?

Don't waste your time on a Doc. Just swallow a band-aid. Problem solved.

If you had a bloody nose theres a good chance it could be from that. Too much nose pickin gets me. I think I've had bloody phlegm a few times, nothin to worry about. I haven't been to the doctor (at least for a regular checkup) in years. Last time I went was to look at my wrist for a ganglion cyst, which they didnt do anything to and it went away. But anyway, it doesn't ring any alarms to me if it only happened once.
