the COUGAR CF-V12HPB and the COUGAR CF-V12HP are both on sale again for $9.99 shipped from newegg right now. i have no idea when they'll go back to $16.99 shipped b/c i couldn't find an expiration date...so you might want to jump on these deals while you can...

*EDIT* - oops, just realized philipma1957 already mentioned the CF-V12HPB in his "newegg deals" thread. this is typically the type of hot deal people like to see in the title of the thread, but mods i'll leave it up to you what to do w/ this thread...

Use promocode BTEJJHB62 for $8/fan. Snag a handful at this sick price and overhaul all your air movers.

I bought two of these and ended up returning them to newegg for a refund- if you use the PWM feature and run then at anything less then 100% speed they make an awful high pitch sequel type of noise. At 100% they are tolerable and move decent amount of air with no extra noises.

Anyone know if these will work with a PWM splitter? I want to run this in a push/pull configuration to a single 4-pin mobo header.

What are the conditions of this promocode? I can't get it to work.
the promo code doesn't work for me either. it must have come from one of those special promo emails that went to specific newegg customers, and therefore can only be used by those customers. that type of promo email usually goes out to folks who recently purchased from newegg as a thank you...otherwise we would have seen it in the regular promo email.

i'm afraid you just got unlucky. i have several of these and none of them have a high-pitched squeal at any speed. if anything, they tend to have a low-pitch hum when running in the upper rpms, but its not something that would attract attention like a high-pitched squeal. the fact that it happened with both of your fans and not just one of them makes me think twice...but then again, perhaps those two fans were near each other on the assembly line and were part of a batch that had some issues. folks used to complain about bearing noise problems when mounting them horizontally, but Cougar addressed that issue a while back, and i've had zero problems w/ my horizontally mounted specimens. at any rate, sorry to hear that you were let down by your Cougar fans. it happens even with the best of them. i've even had the occasional Scythe fan slip through quality control w/ problems, even though its a rare occurrence.

it will work, but i'd be very weary of doing that. the header on the mobo may only be designed to provide enough juice for one fan at (or near) full speed. if you can keep your CPU temp low without running the fans at (or near) full speed, then you'll probably be alright. but turn the fan speed up too high, and the fans will try to draw more power than the mobo header can provide, and you could end up frying the mobo fan header.

The three way PWM splitters I have seen provide a molex plug to provide additional power. The two way splitters look like they plug directly into the motherboard header.

Here's one example from Rosewill. $4 each isn't so bad, but I bought a few when they had a promo code on Rosewill cables a while back. Those pop up every so often.

Love these fans. Recently decked out a Corsair Vengeance C70 white with them (including two in a Kuhler 920 push-pull config) - turned out beautifully.

*UPDATE*

the orange version of this PWM fan (the CF-V12HP) just went on sale for $9.99 shipped as well, so i updated the OP to reflect it.

i can't get the promo code to work on either the orange or the black fans. did you this promo code from a newegg email that offers 10-20% off of multiple product categories? if so, the code will probably work for you only (and maybe a select few others who got the same email as a thank you for making recent purchases). either way, whether you spend $8 or $10 on one of these fans, you're still getting a great deal.

I apologize for all the frustration. Let me trace the source of the code. As Sunny suggests, it could be tied to my account and thus unsharable.

Looks nice. Why do you have fan grills on the inside of your fans (the top exhausts)? And do you get any bubbling with the radiator like that? I thought you were always supposed to have the hoses closer to the bottom to keep bubbles at the top of the reservoir?

^That's another one of those special codes that only work for those who got the email.

These are easily the best 120s for $8.00, though I still have reservations about mounting them horizontally. After conducting my own little test, I can confirm that they run much more smoothly in the vertical position (blowing sideways).

It's just the nature of the bearing.
