While it's interesting to see a giant block of cotton, I'm struggling to come up with anything more than 'oh, neat.' to say about it. FoBoT's already asked about the only legitimate question...
The official story is that a bad swarm of boll weevils came and destroyed the cotton crop one year and the towns people decided to grow other crops and thus avoid another economic disaster.

Wow things have changed alot. My grandfather worked at a Cotton gin when I was a kid and they baled the cotton in much smaller bales back then.
It was almost all pick by hand back then, my dad took me to the cotton fields to pick on a couple of occasions to learn the value of hard work![]()
